[ - ] We are agonizing about whether or not to send our kids to the same school. Our kindergartner got into a supportive private school with excellent resources and we made this decision based on assuring that he will have school in person (crucial for that age group.). This school is very committed to in-person learning. Our fourth grader does well at his very diverse public school and has a solid friend group. His district has been very loosey-goosey with online learning and has not been reassuring about in person school next year. His individual teacher was great this year, but the district as a whole has not been up to task. Would you switch the fourth grader to private, or leave him where he is? He wants to stay at the same school but he is imagining it for how it was and not what it might be next year. It seems that a spot might open up at the private school for him. What would you do? 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I could have written this! We are in exactly the same position. We have decided to keep the fourth grader in public school for 5th and then hopefully move him to private after that. We decided that there is so much change right now and that starting a new school in September (and not finishing elementary with his friends) would be too much at this age. Not sure if it’s the right call, but that’s what feels right. [ Reply | More ]

If money is not an issue, I would move him. I think private schools are much better equipped to handle the current situation and he would be changing schools in 2 years anyway. [ Reply | More ]

That is really my impetus for considering the move. It also seems like our public school has no specific plan. They canceled their summer program, which is telling because social distancing could happen more easily outside. Two in private schools would be not be ideal financially , but it is something that we could handle. [ Reply | More ]

I do not teach lectures. The nature of my teaching is 1 on 1 in a small setting and can't teach the material with a mask on, so it looks like we are staying online (but my universities are doing an earlier start). Both institutions are reaching out about which classes could safely be done in person & which would remain online. Lectures (w/o class discussion) should be relatively easy to do online (depending on the subject and material). Yes, you should push back if you are not comfortable. This is not just about your health, but the health of your family. [ Reply | More ]

So you see, you just need to get a clue. [ Reply | More ]

I feel like how could they know. It's like a logic thing - no one lists "oh I got it from so and so" when they do contact tracing in retrospect, because You will never know who actually had it unless everyone in the world gets a test. Just like - you can only get the droplets if someone is coughing or sneezing, and 6 ft away is okay. Unless you were in that chinese restaurant study, or were in the choir in the NE where all the choir members got it. Same with "children don't give it to parents". The reality seems to be, parents get sicker than children, parents get tested, are found positive, children are tested, are found positive, is the logic that the parents gave it to the child? Why not the other way around? [ Reply | More ]

I am terribly disturbed by what I see as online execution of progressive individuals and progressive companies that have been doing this work for years (see: the Bennet, recently fired editor at New York Times). Activists see that the companies are trying to respond and "do the right thing" so they make aggressive demands, often at the expense of the people who've actually led the efforts to do better. Meanwhile- most companies in america make no effort, and some are really, really egregiously huge and bigoted- Hobby Lobby, Fox News, Chic-fil-A, every meat processor, Abercrombie and Fitch, General Electric, Walmart, Amazon- and activists don't bother with them. It may not work out well in the long run. [ Reply | More ]

My point is that the systemic racism is so much more prevalent (and arguably more dangerous/damaging) than the overt instances, but it constantly slips under the radar. Hopefully orgs really do become more accountable now, like they say they will. Not everyone has a brownface photo to expose their biases. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Really trying to make the right decision here - we live in a wealthy but actually quite diverse area. Our specific area is very white and preppy though. We are deciding between a private school that seems (to me, and a lot of my friends whose children go there) pretty idyllic and a wonderful education and a solid but not "wonderful" public option. The public option is very diverse and the private not so much at 21%. I feel, especially now, choosing this private school is doing my child a disservice and teaching them the wrong lesson. But it would come at the cost of an amazing private education. I really don't know what to do here and would love some UB insight. 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My weirdo daughter is desperate to wear her masks. She’s into accessories of any kind. I made a bunch and got a bunch from Etsy. Our school has a contingent of parents who are 100% against masks and my daughter is definitely going to wear hers anyway they’re not required in the fall. One valid anti-mask concern that a parent raised and that I stupidly hadn’t considered is that it will be hard to kids to hear each other, and kids with hearing impairments will struggle to supplement their hearing loss with lip reading if that’s a strategy they rely on. I have had several family members comment that they think no school is better then school with masks and precautions. None of these people have school aged kids. I just don't get it. My 6yo needs social interaction and I need to work. Something is better then nothing. Sure - I would prefer that none of this ever happened. But it did and now we all must do what we have to do.
