I'm confused about which situations are and are not acceptable in the US to give cash? I'm from the UK where giving cash as a gift in any situation is a complete no-no. But here it seems like there are some situations where it's expected - what are the rules? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Bar mitzvah: cash Graduation: cash Everything else: depends on region and sometimes even the city, event, and sometimes culture/ethnicity of family. Give us some examples of gifts you need to give so we can help. [ Reply | More ]

Do you mean literally cash, or any sort of financial gift? I don't usually give bills - but will give a check (at a wedding, baptism or graduation) or a Visa/Mastercard/Amex gift card (graduations, younger relatives' birthdays, teachers, thank you gifts). The one time I give actual cash is the year end gifts/tips for our building staff. [ Reply | More ]

It's a very east coast thing, but it's slowly catching on elsewhere. My family finds it incredibly crass to give cash. DH's family typically gives cash. [ Reply | More ]

People want less clutter so they don’t want unwanted gifts. Money is just easier all around. [ Reply | More ]

True. In NYC it's considered by many tacky to give a gift (rather than cash) for a wedding. [ Reply | More ]
