Really trying to make the right decision here - we live in a wealthy but actually quite diverse area. Our specific area is very white and preppy though. We are deciding between a private school that seems (to me, and a lot of my friends whose children go there) pretty idyllic and a wonderful education and a solid but not "wonderful" public option. The public option is very diverse and the private not so much at 21%. I feel, especially now, choosing this private school is doing my child a disservice and teaching them the wrong lesson. But it would come at the cost of an amazing private education. I really don't know what to do here and would love some UB insight. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Dont idealize school diversity. Kids always find a way to self segregate and the larger the number the more they do. [ Reply | More ]

NR: FWIW, we went to a diverse public school thinking it would be good for our kid, and I love our parent cohort. Which group of parents feel like your team? [ Reply | More ]

I agree. I care about academics first, everything else is a nice to have. My kids have a long commute, always have, since K. It’s not ideal but imo their school is worth it. [ Reply | More ]

I so agree with this. My dc were for 2 years in a large Miami public school. And this is exactly what happened. Now they are in private school in Manhattan and the more diverse dc are totally integrated. [ Reply | More ]

Have you looked at diversity info for the private. My suburban public is very undiverse and I've noticed that the local private schools are far more diverse than the public school my kids attend in the very affluent suburb we live in. [ Reply | More ]

if DC is bright and doesn't have any learning issues, try the public for a few years. It's kind of hypocritical to claim to care about diversity but then insist on the 'amazing' private school [ Reply | More ]

I’m guessing you are in Larchmont or Mamaroneck and you’re thinking Rye Country Day. I’d stick with Mamaroneck High unless your kid really needs small classes and attention. They have great Exmissions to college, you will be fine. Kids at RCDS, Greenwich Country Day, Brunswick, GA are Uber Uber wealthy and stuck up from what I hear (or a good lot of them are).
