We have a pretty epic dress up collection, could practically run a kids' theater program with it and my dd and her friends had fun goofing around with it all through high school. I think I"ll save some of the greatest hits in case grandkids want to play with them. [ Reply | More ]

Of course you should. My siblings and I still mourn the disappearance during a move of our big collective Lego chest. We have no idea what happened to it and it drives us crazy to this day. Organized to her. When she has a guest who is very good at organization, her home drives them crazy. Especially her kitchen and pantry. [ - ] As a disclaimer, I posted on ybm and was told to talk to someone else at my kid's school. It's a small, public high school. There are less than 500 students, I'd guess. There are two counselors. One helps with class selection. The other helps with college stuff. Now, I do not have a four year degree or understand much about the process. DC's public high school does not rank. I asked the college counselor if the school provides a statement of rank where she could at least say if DC was in the top 10%, 30%, 50%, or whatever. She responded that she didn't know what I was talking about, and the school does not rank. I asked if she knew if any of the schools DC was considering would not consider DC first gen (bioparents don't have bachelor's, but stepparents do, and one is a doctor). She responded that she had no idea why I'd think schools would ask about stepparent education. So I thought I just needed to phrase my questions more clearly. But I was told on the other site that she seemed lazy and I should switch counselors. Since there is no other counselor that does college stuff, who else would I talk to? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

There is nothing wrong with your questions and it sucks that your college counselor is giving you attitude. A good resource is the website College Confidential. I think you should try asking your step parent question there. As for class rank, not all schools rank. My children's school does not and does not provide percentile info to colleges either. It looks like there's a lot of disagreement on College Confidential, so probably schools look at it differently. Maybe my daughter should ask the admission counselors at the different colleges directly? I'd really like a yes or no question on the ranking. But I do understand that the best I'll get is probably "I don't really know what you are trying to ask, but we don't rank." [ Reply | More ]

First gen is almost certainly not going to care about step-parents. Class rank doesn't matter if the school doesn't rank, my DC's school doesn't rank and it was a non-issue, the counselor will send a counselor's recommendation that will make clear whether the DC is a good student or not. [ - ] Therapist moms please help: I feel terrible. I have a longterm therapist that has helped me through childhood trauma. We never really talked about my love life or sex life - it always seemed like there was other work to do and when I brought it up I got the sense that she felt those issues were trivial to my overcoming trauma. Recently I had a spectacular breakup with a boyfriend that was utterly painful and he humiliated me in a way no one has. So I called a friend's couples' therapist and am seeing her weekly and she is helping me in a way the other therapist could not. I did not tell longtime therapist and with the new therapist I lied and said my old therapist was not available and gave an excuse. I am not a liar in therapy. I am very good at being real. What am I doing? Can someone tell me how to come clean or if I need to? 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I am a therapist too and this is some BS. You don't expect a client to come in and immediate tell you everything and your most difficult things. It takes time to build trust and relationships. This is a very small white lie and it is not worth the guilt you are feeling- which I would guess is more related to the difficulty you had in leaving your long term therapist. You can tell her next time you meet with her. [ Reply | More ]

It is easy to solve this. People grow and change and it is normal to feel like you want a change. I would tell the first therapist that you are taking a break and the second one that you are looking for a therapist who can help you with relationships and that you felt your long term therapist had helped you with trauma [ Reply | More ]

I'm not a therapist but I have been a patient. It occurs to me that you are deeply afraid of sharing your whole self with anyone and the vulnerability that entails. So you shared a part of your life (your childhood trauma) with therapist 1 but held back about your current romantic life. And you projected it as being her fault for being disinterested. Now those relationship issues are coming to a head and you need to get it out but since you can't share it with therapist 1, you found therapist 2. Except now you don't want to share other things about you and your past with therapist 2 because again that's too much for you to share with one person and this time you're blaming it on the awkwardness of switching therapists and the white lie you told but it's really just an excuse. The honorary mask police are horrendous in Riverside Park. If you are worried and want to be where people are pretty consistently wearing masks, go there instead of Central Park. I agree that Central Park is a mix. [ Reply | More ]

A mask will restrict airflow in and out of the mouth and nose, creating a situation where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange are compromised,” says Michael Figueroa, EdD, a professor and graduate director of kinesiology at William Paterson University of New Jersey. He explains that during physical activity, the body’s carbon dioxide levels rise, resulting in faster breathing and increased heart rate. The mask might trap some of this carbon dioxide inside. While levels are too low to cause poisoning, they could lead to fatigue. [ Reply | More ]

Yes! Great job. A truly addicting activity once you get going. I used to get side stitches because I wasn't breathing properly. Try to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. I personally wear shorts in temps 55 degrees or so up. Yesterday I was running in Central Park and was truly baffled by the number of folks in leggings - I would just melt. I second the recommendation to get a good pair of running shoes, but you really need to be fitted in a running store (the shoes you choose will depend on your gait). Not sure where you can do this right now unfortunately. [ Reply | More ]

op: good tips, thanks so much. I probably wasn't breathing correctly. I breathe very heavily on the slight incline portions of the loop- my heart rate was in the 160's (I'm 40yo)- hopefully it will improve with more practice. [ Reply | More ]

I know that loop very well :-). It is a lot of rolling hills. So my recommendation - try to keep your heart rate pretty consistent the entire run. If you need to slow way down on the uphills, that's okay - this will train your body and you will also get better at running hills at the same time (which is a whole thing that runners need to conquer). Central Park is a great place to run but it is not an easy place to run, if that makes sense. [ Reply | More ]

Long time runner here - congrats and welcome to the club :) When I get side stitches I massage it (as I’m running) and try to work it out. Usually it will go away after a few minutes. I run it shorts when its warm. I got some biker style shorts from Amazon that come down to a little above the knee - I like them because I feel like I get better range of motion and also I don’t have to worry about anything jiggling. Other tips - find great music you love to run to. Push yourself but also listen to your body and don’t feel bad if you need to stop or slow down for a bit. Make sure you have good shoes - you can injure yourself by running in old or worn down shoes - BTDT. If you get blisters, don’t pop them if you can help it. Try covering with some band aid tape. Other than that, enjoy :) [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Any advice? My oldest is 8. She is always so cheerful when we say, who will help us clean the bathroom/weed the garden/etc? (Younger sister will be sweet and lovey to try to get out of anything) She always follows the rules, eats what she’s served, she never asks for anything for her bday/Christmas, is happy with whatever activity we do together or put her in (camp/sport/art/etc). The issue: she still has meltdowns if a toddler takes her toy at the pool, or a friend reorganizes her Lego scene, or someone tries to play a game the “wrong” way. We have talked about it a lot, worked on strategies, etc. If we are out somewhere, we immediately take her to the car if she has a fit. But if something violates her sense of fairness, she just really struggles to deal with it. 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My parents always say they wish they had impressed upon her sooner that life isn't fair. I would try to flip the script on her and see how her perception of fairness isn't everyone's. For example: "The baby at the pool hasn't learned about sharing yet. You are old enough that you have. I know it doesn't seem fair that he took your toys, but when you had a temper tantrum, you were a big kid yelling at a baby. Is that fair?" [ Reply | More ]

try really focusing on the good things you mentioned. Give her tons of praise when she is helpful, grateful, accepting. She sounds like an amazing kid. And at a calm moment, talk to her about how life isn't fair. But honestly, I have a kid like yours. She is now 18. And while I thought it was about fairness when she was little, I have since learned that is not the issue. It's actually more like a mild form of OCD. Mindfulness and CBT help. [ Reply | More ]

My kid had different issues, but did have tantrums if he didn’t get his way. The OT would set up a game, like chutes and ladders, and tell DS ahead of time that they were playing, but he was going to lose the game. This was to get him used to the feeling of disappointment and being ok with it. I do think it helped and when we would play at home, I would warn him constantly while we were playing that he might lose. This seemed to help. Maybe do some role playing with your kid... I was like that. I think it was partially my parents' fault - great parents overall but they tried to shelter me. So when something happened to me that I thought was not fair, I had meltdowns. Once I got out into the real world and learned that life is often unfair, it took me a few years to become more indifferent and resilient. [ Reply | More ]
