I'm just starting to get into running and I've been doing the lower loop of Central Park (slowly). Today I got a side stitch- how can I prevent that? Also, do you run in shorts or leggings in the summer? Any other tips for a newbie? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Awesome! Drinking too much before running can do this. Generally, I stay hydrated all day so that I'm not guzzling before a run. I run in shorts. Leggings only in winter. Going slow and mindful of form is better than just going fast. Do you have a goal in mind? [ Reply | More ]

Ah, that makes sense. I simultaneously have been trying to drink a gallon of water per day. My goal is to lose 10lbs and hopefully I'll enjoy running and it will become a hobby in the process. Any recs for shorts that don't ride up? [ Reply | More ]

This is so hard bc bodies are different. I love Oiselle. They truly don't run up on me. I like Tracksmith but have a hard time finding things that fit really well. I like their fabrics. I think I'm more caught up with their marketing than I am with the clothes. I think you'll love Oiselle. I swear by their running bras. I've bought five shorts from them in the past three years. I do like Tracksmith running shirts. [ Reply | More ]

Welcome to running!! Remember your hat, and don't buy too much gear at first, because you'll lose so much weight that you'll soon outgrow it! See you in the park! [ Reply | More ]

No, I wear a Nike baseball cap (synthetic, not cotton) and it acts like a sweatband and keeps the sun out of my eyes. [ Reply | More ]

I have been running in CP without a mask for weeks. Haven't been yelled at there - and I've been regularly yelled at in Riverside. [ Reply | More ]

The honorary mask police are horrendous in Riverside Park. If you are worried and want to be where people are pretty consistently wearing masks, go there instead of Central Park. I agree that Central Park is a mix. [ Reply | More ]

op: I wear my mask until I get inside Central Park and then pull it down so I can breathe while running, and I would say at least 50-70% of other runners/walkers there are doing this too. [ Reply | More ]

It's really not healthy though and could be dangerous for some people who cannot get enough oxygen while wearing the mask. [ Reply | More ]

A mask will restrict airflow in and out of the mouth and nose, creating a situation where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange are compromised,” says Michael Figueroa, EdD, a professor and graduate director of kinesiology at William Paterson University of New Jersey. He explains that during physical activity, the body’s carbon dioxide levels rise, resulting in faster breathing and increased heart rate. The mask might trap some of this carbon dioxide inside. While levels are too low to cause poisoning, they could lead to fatigue. [ Reply | More ]

Interesting: I know perfectly well that i can't breathe as well wearing the mask, but I wanted to be considerate to my fellow park users. Does your source suggest doing away with the mask? [ Reply | More ]

Yes! Great job. A truly addicting activity once you get going. I used to get side stitches because I wasn't breathing properly. Try to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. I personally wear shorts in temps 55 degrees or so up. Yesterday I was running in Central Park and was truly baffled by the number of folks in leggings - I would just melt. I second the recommendation to get a good pair of running shoes, but you really need to be fitted in a running store (the shoes you choose will depend on your gait). Not sure where you can do this right now unfortunately. [ Reply | More ]

op: good tips, thanks so much. I probably wasn't breathing correctly. I breathe very heavily on the slight incline portions of the loop- my heart rate was in the 160's (I'm 40yo)- hopefully it will improve with more practice. [ Reply | More ]

I know that loop very well :-). It is a lot of rolling hills. So my recommendation - try to keep your heart rate pretty consistent the entire run. If you need to slow way down on the uphills, that's okay - this will train your body and you will also get better at running hills at the same time (which is a whole thing that runners need to conquer). Central Park is a great place to run but it is not an easy place to run, if that makes sense. [ Reply | More ]

Long time runner here - congrats and welcome to the club :) When I get side stitches I massage it (as I’m running) and try to work it out. Usually it will go away after a few minutes. I run it shorts when its warm. I got some biker style shorts from Amazon that come down to a little above the knee - I like them because I feel like I get better range of motion and also I don’t have to worry about anything jiggling. Other tips - find great music you love to run to. Push yourself but also listen to your body and don’t feel bad if you need to stop or slow down for a bit. Make sure you have good shoes - you can injure yourself by running in old or worn down shoes - BTDT. If you get blisters, don’t pop them if you can help it. Try covering with some band aid tape. Other than that, enjoy :) [ Reply | More ]

And keep in mind that every person's body is different. Do you and notice pains and aches and what exercises to incorporate to compensate. I don't think running is that hard on your body as long as you work on keeping other things strong like core, glutes and stretch a lot. Have fun! You're going to find running to be a wonderful stress reliever. [ Reply | More ]

Not OP but I too have recently gotten into running thanks to the comments on this board. Still slow and overweight but finally starting to understand why it's so addicting. I find it helps keep mild depression/anxiety at bay which is even more valuable than the weight loss aspect (for me at least) [ Reply | More ]

I love running in shorts in this weather, though many people prefer something longer. After a few runs, you'll decide what you're more comfortable with, and that's the bottom line. [ Reply | More ]
