As a disclaimer, I posted on ybm and was told to talk to someone else at my kid's school. It's a small, public high school. There are less than 500 students, I'd guess. There are two counselors. One helps with class selection. The other helps with college stuff. Now, I do not have a four year degree or understand much about the process. DC's public high school does not rank. I asked the college counselor if the school provides a statement of rank where she could at least say if DC was in the top 10%, 30%, 50%, or whatever. She responded that she didn't know what I was talking about, and the school does not rank. I asked if she knew if any of the schools DC was considering would not consider DC first gen (bioparents don't have bachelor's, but stepparents do, and one is a doctor). She responded that she had no idea why I'd think schools would ask about stepparent education. So I thought I just needed to phrase my questions more clearly. But I was told on the other site that she seemed lazy and I should switch counselors. Since there is no other counselor that does college stuff, who else would I talk to? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Well, I have a JD and I was the first one in my family to attend college and I don't know what you're talking about. Class rank, I get. First gen. I always thought referred to 1st gen. American. [ Reply | More ]

There is nothing wrong with your questions and it sucks that your college counselor is giving you attitude. A good resource is the website College Confidential. I think you should try asking your step parent question there. As for class rank, not all schools rank. My children's school does not and does not provide percentile info to colleges either. It looks like there's a lot of disagreement on College Confidential, so probably schools look at it differently. Maybe my daughter should ask the admission counselors at the different colleges directly? I'd really like a yes or no question on the ranking. But I do understand that the best I'll get is probably "I don't really know what you are trying to ask, but we don't rank." [ Reply | More ]

First gen is almost certainly not going to care about step-parents. Class rank doesn't matter if the school doesn't rank, my DC's school doesn't rank and it was a non-issue, the counselor will send a counselor's recommendation that will make clear whether the DC is a good student or not.
