Anyone see the new information that Covid is rarely spread through asymptomatic people? I feel like that is a big deal. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm not taking any of these claims as gospel right now, because just in the past couple weeks, I saw other (reputable) sources claiming that up to 30% of spread was through asymptomatic carriers. Right now I'm just going to continue taking pretty aggressive precautions (DH is high risk) and see how everything shakes out. [ Reply | More ]

I saw that the WHO doctor misspoke and is having another press conference today to clear things up. She failed to make a distinction between asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic people. People are extremely contagious in the days before symptoms appear, and often the symptoms are so mild they go unnoticed. [ Reply | More ]

Other news today: 70 percent of covid cases in ER don't have fever. [ Reply | More ]

That doesn't mean they are asymptomatic. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, but all the temperature taking to screen people before they enter buildings or whatever seems a little ineffective in detecting the virus! [ Reply | More ]

It can easily be combined with a short questionnaire. [ Reply | More ]

np. are these really effective? I think people will just lie. They are obviously trying to be out and about doing whatever it is they are doing despite symptoms/exposure. If they were taking precautions, they wouldn't be trying to get in in the first place! [ Reply | More ]

Obviously they are not perfect. But what is your alternative? Stay inside until there is a vaccine (which must be effective and taken by enough people to confer herd immunity). "They are obviously trying to be out and about..." I've seen temperature checks and questionnaires in routine medical appointments. Is that "fun-time" in your book? [ Reply | More ]

Nothing will make certain people stay in. This dad in our school openly told people, "pretty sure we had it first week in March, our kids were really sick that weekend we had the basketball tournament" And yes sick kids were all at that basketball tournament. I can't. [ Reply | More ]

It's better than no screening at all, obviously. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, obviously. That's why you don't need to say this. Because it is obvious. [ Reply | More ]

I do need to say this when you specifically criticize the temperature screenings. [ Reply | More ]

Christ. Okay, I "do need" to say this: I did not criticize the temperature screenings. I criticized the fact that they are not the be-all and end-all. Many people think you can just take someone's temperature and that tells you what you need to know. This is inherently dangerous because it gives people a false sense of security. So you see, you just need to get a clue. [ Reply | More ]

I feel like how could they know. It's like a logic thing - no one lists "oh I got it from so and so" when they do contact tracing in retrospect, because You will never know who actually had it unless everyone in the world gets a test. Just like - you can only get the droplets if someone is coughing or sneezing, and 6 ft away is okay. Unless you were in that chinese restaurant study, or were in the choir in the NE where all the choir members got it. Same with "children don't give it to parents". The reality seems to be, parents get sicker than children, parents get tested, are found positive, children are tested, are found positive, is the logic that the parents gave it to the child? Why not the other way around? [ Reply | More ]
