The earliest is June 22 (not June 20), and let's see. I think the protests might mean more positives, and then we will be set back. OR -- I think that is what most people are doing now, which is not isolating. Isolating is no one in, no one out, all deliveries contactless, wiping down everything was delivered. And I do know a lot of families who did that at the beginning (including my family). But now we have seen cousins, had a few of the teenager's friends over the back yard (with masks when they weren't 6 feet apart), gone to the occasional doctor's appointment, gone to the grocery store (with masks and gloves). IOW, no longer isolating at all, but rather just taking precautions. [ Reply | More ]

It's very unusual. We are in California, though, and my rising senior attends a school that does not administer SAT or ACT during the school day. Her April and June ACT tests were cancelled, and she was shut out of July. She got an error for the August SAT and got an SAT date for September. So I'm sure their decision has more to do with limited access to testing. [ Reply | More ]

Access to testing is definitely driving the decision for next year, but schools are extending it into the following year so they can assess whether they should eliminate completely. There's a lot of conversation on the inequalities of testing due to test prep, etc. The UC system announced a few weeks ago that they will be phasing out over the next 4 years and possibly developing their own test. I know. They say they'll go test-blind if they cannot figure out a way to make an equitable test. There really is no way to make it equitable as long as there is an entire industry devoted to providing test prep for those willing to pay big bucks. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Okay, I posted about emergency potty training my 3.5 year old for camp (starting June 29). He’s been diaper free since Saturday, and had FOUR FRIGGIN’ ACCIDENTS today. I am literally asking “do you have to go pee pee” every 60 seconds. He will say “no” and pee his pants 2 minutes later. He doesn’t want to go bare bottom (keeps asking for pants), but has been pooping on the potty accident-free since January. What else can I do?! Help! He is desperate to go to camp and we are desperate for him to go, too! 23 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Don't ask him. Take him in the bathroom every 20 minutes. You will feel like you are living in the bathroom for the next 3 days, but don't give up. Blow bubbles while he is sitting on the potty. Training my 2nd was completely miserable for 3 days and we almost gave up, but then he got it. [ Reply | More ]

Then you can stretch it to every hour, and then ever 2 hours + every time before you leave and when you arrive somewhere with a bathroom. He'll eventually be able to tell you or take himself to the bathroom, but probably not for quite a while. [ Reply | More ]

Months. But it's really not a big deal. Once he's in a good routine (even with you leading it), he'll have only rare accidents even if he doesn't tell you he needs to go. That would mean you/counselor/teacher take him to the bathroom when he wakes up, before every meal, when leaving and arriving anywhere, and before bedtime. I promise, you can get through this. Stick with it! [ Reply | More ]

This. One of the whole keys to the "Oh, Crap" book is that you don't ask. You say "it's time to pee" and march them to the potty. [ Reply | More ]

The more zen you can make yourself, the faster it will work. Pretend you don't care. Don't ask every 60 seconds. Don't ask at all actually, the answer will always be no. Just calmly say "it's time to use the potty" at a regular interval. [ Reply | More ]

One more thing, do anything to keep him sitting on the potty. Bubbles were the best for us. He can also "read" board books or you can read to him. Do a sticker chart, feed him m&m's, just try different things until you find out what keeps him sitting and trying. [ Reply | More ]

This is how you train. I trained both my kids at 2 using the method in the “Oh Crap” potty training method. It’s all about them learning to recognize the cues. You help them at first by them going pantsless and watching for a cue they are about to go. Rush them to potty. Pretty soon recognizing their own cues clicks for them. Dont our pants on till they reliably do this. Then go commando for a while as underwear feels too much like diapers (muscle memory). It’s effective. It works (well, for my n of 2). It’s a quick read and I highly recommend. [ Reply | More ]

Last week I got an email from a senior executive at a different big consulting firm, he said he’d heard about my expertise from one of my former clients and wanted to have an intro call to discuss the space. I did the call with him today and he had of his colleagues on the line. Essentially they’re business has dried up and they wanted me to help pivot into my area. I listened to them waffle for about 15 minutes before they started asking pointed questions about what I do and how I charge, which I refused to answer. It wasn’t hostile but I told them that obviously I wasn’t going to be training a competitor and help them out. I'm also a native New Yorker, with NY roots going back to the 1800'a. I would move out now if we could. DH works in the UN, so we can't go far, and the immediate suburbs don't hold any appeal. But I do think NYC is going to be absolutely dead for a few years, and the school situation is going to be dire for more than just a few months. Have you been to Chinatown recently? Early/mid 40s. DCs are 2nd and 4th. I don’t mean to imply it’s an easy decision - in retrospect I feel like I wasted 2 seasons of my life getting them into TT schools - but I’m no longer convinced it’s what’s best for them. Even before 2020 happened, I was increasingly uncomfortable with the direction the city was headed - not the same place I envisioned letting my kids eventually navigate on their own. [ Reply | More ]

The thing about the impact of all this on NYC is it is an 'inconvenient truth'. no one wants it to be so. everyone wants nyc to bounce back. we have a good chunk of our money - prob 70% - tied up in our NYC apartment. our lives are there! it brings me ZERO joy to predict that NYC will not be the same for a long time. I make 60k this year and was slated to make 62k next year. Today in faculty meeting they stated that since enrollment has dropped for next year they no longer can give us raises and will re-issue our contracts with the 19-20 salary. In other industries, it would be and it happens. Assuming you are not unionized, I don’t see how this would be illegal under the current very unusual circumstances. Unless you can find a better job in a different school, you don’t really have too much of a choice, and it is not so terrible compared to all the job losses, furloughs, major compensation cuts. The other issue is the school under enrollment. Assuming they are a true 3rd tier (and not a new for profit), it sounds like they punched above their weight: accepted and tried to attract top students and were looking to compete with the big gun schools. I know lovely families with smart kids who would have been thrilled to get into some 3rd tier schools and didn’t get accepted. A well managed 3rd tier school should not be struggling to enroll students. There is still a supply demand imbalance at this level. [ Reply | More ]

Ridiculous. How will this work for working parents? We need the kids to be in school every day (at least in the beginning of the school year). This would be too disruptive in the learning to go to school every other day. What they could do is to have school every day until Thanksgiving or winter break and then switch to remote learning if there is a potential 2nd wave. This way the kids will have a chance to meet their teachers and classmates in the first half fo the school year. [ Reply | More ]

I question the idea that it trumps public health guidelines. It is possible for parents to find other childcare solutions. Because the people supervising them would not be teachers? I mean, if the DOE can magically double its number of teachers by September, then by all means. The teachers work every day and they teach half the kids one day and the same lesson the next. They have assignments on google classroom for the day they are not there. I would prefer week on week off, but it's a no-brainer that some form of staggering is going to be needed to comply with the health directives. [ Reply | More ]

Where was this? It's largely been left to the individual schools to figure out how they're going to handle it, at least at the high-school level. And what's scary is that many of them have only just started planning. (Relative is on a planning panel for a HS.) [ Reply | More ]

It will be inconvenient, but it is not the DOE that decides that social distancing is required. Some kids can continue to distance learn. Groups can try to organize into pods to help with commuting and childcare. Many may also be working from home or have flexibility with their hours, depending on childcare/school hours. There may be childcare centers or before/after school options, private at least, that hopefully help out. Nothing about this has been convenient. But staggering to every other day is not the biggest issue, IMO. [ Reply | More ]

I think the pandemic has been stressful in nearly every way, present and future. But instead of getting angry and pointing fingers, or even waiting for the PTA, class parents, DOE, state funding, government guidelines, etc people can start to make plans for themselves too. Instead of thinking they need to bail, as if privates won't get the virus, or small towns won't get hit, they can get prepared. They can find out who in their building or neighborhood or school is willing to help out and organize now, in case the schedules are staggered, in case childcare is needed, in case someone in the household is sick and a family self-quarantines (so student needs work sent home, family needs food, etc). Parents can try to pitch in together to hire an after school or alternate day sitter and keep kids (from the same school) occupied at one DC's house, on rotation, so parents can WFH more efficiently. But if we are grouping our dc together at home instead of at school, are we really gaining on the social distancing front? [ Reply | More ]

I'm a teacher and a parent. I really hope my district and my kids' district both go to a hybrid program like this. Both my own children need some teacher attention and social interaction they find in school. But they both do really well working on their own at home, too. My own classroom is already only at about 16-18 kids, so to have 8-9 kids per day? The individual attention I could give would be amazing. I do as much as I can in my already small classroom, but I could seriously meet 1:1 with every single kid every day. [ Reply | More ]

But you would only be meeting with the kids every other day... So many kids have done horribly on the remote learning. [ Reply | More ]

This is true. But I believe that what I could do with a very small group of kids in 2 days + sending home all the less important work (ie, handwriting, some worksheets) for distance learning will be significant. Much less time wasted on behaviors. I'd be very happy if we all went back as usual too. I love my job. [ Reply | More ]

yes but this would kill everyone else's jobs especially those with younger kids for whom remote learning is not a thing/ abject failure. [ Reply | More ]

So, you can have your kids home with you every single day for months or you can have them home with you 3 days a week. Which do you prefer? Because kids back in school 5 days a week isn't an option. [ Reply | More ]
