To the person who posts almost every day about people moving out of NYC: We are not moving out. We love NYC. Covid19 will not drive us out. Neither 911 nor the 2008 financial crisis drove us out. Live with your decision to move to the burbs. It is also a great place to live. We are not coming. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm also a native New Yorker, with NY roots going back to the 1800'a. I would move out now if we could. DH works in the UN, so we can't go far, and the immediate suburbs don't hold any appeal. But I do think NYC is going to be absolutely dead for a few years, and the school situation is going to be dire for more than just a few months. Have you been to Chinatown recently? It's a boarded-up ghost town. [ Reply | More ]

This - I get it. I want to escape too - but this whole crisis is making me want to double down on a vacation house so I have somewhere to escape to. I love my city in all of its dysfunction. [ Reply | More ]

A lot of people are making that decision. Many of whom were already on the fence and the pandemic, protests and upcoming presidential election are just accelerating the trend. NYC is going to take years to recover from this. It’s totally different to the others shocks you mention [ Reply | More ]

Yes, those posts are so annoying. Like the people on Facebook who announce that they're leaving Facebook when they could JUST LEAVE. I'm born and raised here and have no plans to leave so I would appreciate not having to read over and over again about what a crime ridden, wasteland the city will be with no good schools, no rich people tax dollars blah blah blah. Enough already, we get it! [ Reply | More ]

I think I am making the right decision given my own circumstances but it did not occur to me that >>NYC is going to be absolutely dead for a few years<< as poster said above. Hopefully everything works out for the best [ Reply | More ]

Not sure who is posting. Born and raised in NY (3rd gen ) and moved out permanently. It’s sad but I’m happier , my family is better off. NYC will take years to recover. At 43, I don’t have time or money to waste [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like OP is in the minority here. We also stayed through 9/11, the financial crisis, and don’t forget Sandy. But this is it for us. Like the OR, we don’t have the time in our lives (or our kid’s lives) for NYC to bounce back. [ Reply | More ]

Early/mid 40s. DCs are 2nd and 4th. I don’t mean to imply it’s an easy decision - in retrospect I feel like I wasted 2 seasons of my life getting them into TT schools - but I’m no longer convinced it’s what’s best for them. Even before 2020 happened, I was increasingly uncomfortable with the direction the city was headed - not the same place I envisioned letting my kids eventually navigate on their own. [ Reply | More ]

Good for you, do you want a “Real NYer” badge? Who cares? I’m born and raised NYer, but with young kids, I’m keeping my eyes open for opportunities elsewhere. [ Reply | More ]

The thing about the impact of all this on NYC is it is an 'inconvenient truth'. no one wants it to be so. everyone wants nyc to bounce back. we have a good chunk of our money - prob 70% - tied up in our NYC apartment. our lives are there! it brings me ZERO joy to predict that NYC will not be the same for a long time. It bums me out SO much! financially, spiritually, emotionally. Doesn't make it any less factually and scientifically likely. [ Reply | More ]

agreed. same. i just cannot for the life of me understand why people are fleeing the city. unless you are super high risk. even if you get covid statistically you will be FINE your kids will be FINE! things will be normal again. and those who want a yard and a big house - those are the reasons i do NOT want to live in the suburbs. our jobs will not be remote forever. i work for a conservative office they want us back in the fall. i guess if you work at google its diff (remote indefinitely). but then again i grew up in the suburbs and i HATE the suburbs. literally my nightmare to have a big house and have to go to home depot every weekend. I'm not afraid of catching Covid and I hate the stereotypical suburban lifestyle but the city's finances are in shambles. The city will suffer and the quality of living will go down. Crime was already on the uptick. Taxes were through the roof. Our neighborhood playground was an embarrassment and when it finally reopened it was routinely covered in human feces. [ Reply | More ]

I'm the same. grew up in the suburbs as did DH. neither of us wants to live in one ever again. dc loves NYC and nothing will replace their experience that they're having. school, friend group, activities, access to culture is only here. [ Reply | More ]
