Hi everyone. I am a teacher at an independent school. In March we had to sign and turn in our contracts for the 20-21 school year. These contracts included our raises and new salary. I.e. I make 60k this year and was slated to make 62k next year. Today in faculty meeting they stated that since enrollment has dropped for next year they no longer can give us raises and will re-issue our contracts with the 19-20 salary. So I am signing the same contract, but now for 60k not 62k. Is this legal? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I don’t know if it’s legal but given the deflation that’s about to hit our economy I’d be happy to stay flat! What % is the drop in students? [ Reply | More ]

My school was under-enrolled this year by 20 students out of 450 target and we are currently under enrolled by 30 for next year but there is major concern that it drop further this summer. To get under enrolled by just 30 I suspect the school accepted everyone who applied. [ Reply | More ]

Honestly, I would sign it. So much is going to change. Much of it to the worse. We were accepted to 5th grade private, and we are likely to move. [ Reply | More ]

I just had my share of insurance changed -- employer school (independent) says it can't afford it's share. So mine is going up. It's horrible. It amounts to a pay cut. They were told it's legal. [ Reply | More ]

In other industries, it would be and it happens. Assuming you are not unionized, I don’t see how this would be illegal under the current very unusual circumstances. Unless you can find a better job in a different school, you don’t really have too much of a choice, and it is not so terrible compared to all the job losses, furloughs, major compensation cuts. The other issue is the school under enrollment. Assuming they are a true 3rd tier (and not a new for profit), it sounds like they punched above their weight: accepted and tried to attract top students and were looking to compete with the big gun schools. I know lovely families with smart kids who would have been thrilled to get into some 3rd tier schools and didn’t get accepted. A well managed 3rd tier school should not be struggling to enroll students. There is still a supply demand imbalance at this level. [ Reply | More ]

450 is a lot of kids...is it a k-12? or k-8? [ Reply | More ]

sounds like a k-8. 50 kids per grade x 9 grades = 450. I wonder if this is my private. [ Reply | More ]

Unfortunately it is. Many people are hurting, so I think keeping the old salary is fair. Many people have lost their jobs or had major pay reductions, so I would take it. [ Reply | More ]
