[ - ] I have 3 gamers at home, they are 15 and 17. The 17 y.o does have sedentary part time work. I turn off the screens but they kind of hang around waiting me out. My new idea is to get them fitness trackers and set an amount to complete each day. We are in the suburbs with a pool, bikes and dogs to walk so it is not lack of opportunity. All are thin but this sitting around seems so unhealthy. What do you think? 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My 18 yo is sitting around so much that he's been eating less because his calorie need has decreased. He's also happy and healthy, and tends to be underweight. I'm not micromanaging screen time, he's been through anxiety and significant depression so happy is equal to healthy for us right now. [ Reply | More ]

^^In other words, he's a gamer, it makes him happy, I accept that. We pushed him to go outside last weekend and the sight of so many in masks triggered a panic attack, not worth it. If your kids are older teens and gamers, and they are happy, and are doing their part in walking the dog, not sure what the problem is. [ Reply | More ]

Do you think that is a good long term solution. My son sufffers from anxiety and also wants to be on the game all day. I don’t think it is healthy at all and I do not think avoiding things that cause anxiety work in the long run. I do not mean this as a criticism at all. NP [ Reply | More ]

My dh suffers from depression and anxiety and his parents allowed their kids to not do anything and watch tv and play games. His sister still has issues and his parents support her and her family. My dh has learned to cope through diet, exercise but I am not sure avoiding stressors really works. [ Reply | More ]

When you have had a kid be suicidal, your priorities shift. What is healthy for my kid might not work for you, but yes, for my DC we need to be more protective and limit the stressors. For example, he's going to a very nurturing college next year as we all knew that a pressure-cooker school could literally be dangerous. He can deal with most things given time and support, but he's been inside for over a month, a sudden exposure to a very different and frankly scary context wasn't our best move so we're not pushing for more right now. Google "Crate and Barrel coupon code" and look on coupon sites like RetailMeNot - involves a little trial and error. Even easier, add the Honey app as a browser extension to Chrome (on your laptop or desktop - don't think it's available for mobile) and it automatically scans every available coupon code at checkout. Of course, there are often caveats at furniture stores that coupons don't apply to upholstery, but worth a try. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. The guarantee of public education is a universal truth for us as Americans, and for our generation and our parents' generation (and even our grandparents' generation in most cases), we have never known a time when kids age 5-18 didn't have a place to go for 6-ish hours a day. Many of us planned our families and budgets around this universal truth. Sure, we have both paid and subsidized aftercare (and sometimes before-care) to fill in the gaps for working parents, but even those programs are structured around the universal truth that kids are cared for by the state for the bulk of the day. As someone who is privileged to be able to work from home and supervise my kids who are remote learning, who has been strictly quarantining and yes, wiping down my freaking groceries, trust me - I'm absolutely NOT ignoring that. But how can you ignore that we have a massive crisis for the majority of families who don't have the same privilege? Including your nannies' and housekeepers' families. Families of "non essential" hourly workers who are barely getting by as it is. [ Reply | More ]

So they can open childcare centers with food for those kids. Other kids stay home to relieve crowding. But if you open school when the virus is still hot, you’re basically forcing everyone to be exposed. [ Reply | More ]

"Childcare centers with food" sounds well and good, and might have been a stop-gap for essential/healthcare workers in the lockdown, but as we're into phases 2, 3 and 4 you're talking literally hundreds of thousands of children (disproportionately more in poorer neighborhoods). These centers aren't necessarily equipped for all of those kids to do remote learning at their different/respective schools (especially younger kids who we all know need more hands-on help with remote learning), so they basically don't get ZERO education? On the contrary, "school is childcare" is the ultimate uber privileged gaslighting. Compulsory, fully-funded public education is a recent phenomena and something only possible in a rich, privileged society. If we've turned into people incapable of taking care of our own children for a few months, then the fault is not in our stars, but in ourselves. Now, granted, the government should do more to account for the new fiscal reality. But that's it. If the money is sorted and we can't care for our own children, then what the hell are we even doing? Under that logic, we're not even mothers, the government is and we're the cool aunt who sees them when the government isn't taking care of them. [ Reply | More ]

Masks are required in common areas of buildings so yes, people wear them upon leaving their apartment. Gloves really haven't proven to be effective so most people just hit the elevator buttons with their keys or elbows. Each building has their own guidelines about how many people can use the elevator at once.I personally let it pass by if it stops and the occupant is elderly. My building only allows three people in at a time; others may be different. I wasn't irritated by your question - just had no idea what else you were looking to find out. My last line was meant to be about parking - I don't have a car- so that's all the info I have about parking on the streets. [ Reply | More ]

The school has said they are starting on their normal time, but they haven't said what campus life will look like, and we are waiting for that to decide if DS will take a gap year. His plan has already been approved by the school, and he has until July 15th to decide, which is good, but it's still very stressful not knowing yet. That random poster was sharing her opinion which has no bearing on any actual school policy-making. You are taking your anger about this difficult and stressful time out on an anonymous person by name-calling. You point out that you dont have the luxury of keeping your child home when you feel its unsafe, because you need to earn a living. You are not alone with that issue. But you might have another luxury: the luxury of having a healthy child, or a healthy partner who wont be at high-risk if your child returns to school. We are all parents here. [ Reply | More ]

There are many perspectives to consider. Thank you for pointing that out. I think a lot of people, perhaps in stress, don't stop to consider that there are so many variables to balance out. I feel like this site has taken on a more sensitive tone, and I noticed it on our school mom site recently too. Sounds like it's about time. That being said, I don't think it's mean to give nicknames here, as long as the person isn't made fun of. Some people go by their nickname, like "ER mom" or "Ob/gyn resident". [ - ] WWYD: I found out through the grapevine that one of my coworkers complained to HR about her workload, how stressed she is, and how responsive our management has been to her concerns about workload, and overly aggressive timelines. A few days later, HR sets up a call with me for 30 minutes about "employee engagement" and asks about if this job is what I expected, if the workload is what I expected, if I feel supported by upper management, etc,. I didn't throw anyone under the bus but I felt like she was looking for it. I did say the workload is quite a bit. During the same period, another coworker quit and apparently gave HR an earful about what she thought about our company on her way out. Recently upper management started extending deadlines. Do you think something happened? Should I let someone know this has all been happening behind the scenes between HR and junior employees? 22 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Since corona the schools have sent out emails saying to contact their COO if you are having payment issues and they will work with you. [ Reply | More ]

Same here- our contract has a clause protecting them if school is remote, doesn’t start on time, happens on weekends, or there is a pandemic. [ Reply | More ]

Many private school families actually prefer that school be remote in the fall. They are comfortable in their vacation homes and do not want to return to NYC in the current state, nor do they want to deal with all the limitations that are proposed for in-person school. It's not worth it to them--they would just prefer to stay where they are and pay for remote learning. [ Reply | More ]

That seems crazy to me, as every kid and parent I know hates remote school. But I'm not a richie rich. I guess it's different if you can pay a tutor or something to sit with your kid every day to do his remote schooling. [ Reply | More ]

We have a summer house on the beach and I want to get back to normal. If I wanted to be in an area like this full time, we would have purchased a primary residence elsewhere and not nyc. [ Reply | More ]

Sure, don't pay. They won't come after you. Whether or not that is a good moral choice is another question. [ Reply | More ]
