Friendswithfourpaws is also a wonderful rescue. They rescue dogs in Oklahoma, foster and vaccinate/etc, and transport them to NYC. They have volunteers who foster here so potential new owners can meet rescues, and then for the first 2 weeks after "adoption", it's considered a "trial period;" if all goes well, they then transfer microchip to your name. Their contract says you will always let them know if the rescue is no longer working so they can rehome the pet. http://www.friendswithfourpaws.org/ [ Reply | More ]

We used Ruff House Rescue based out on Long Island and they were great. Our dog was rescued and transported from Texas and she's the sweetest. She was 2 years old when we adopted her (lab mix) and it worked perfect for our family since we skipped over the very cute but VERY challenging puppy period. Another rescue that we checked out was See Spot rescued in Jersey City. [ Reply | More ]

We haven’t been since nyc dr’s are only just starting to take appointments for non emergency visits but both my and dr’s dentist and primary physicians have sent detailed guidelines re visit and I would feel comfortable going. I'm upstate and went for a routine follow-up visit last month. It was fine. Everyone had to wear masks. They pre-screened me the day before over the phone, took my temperature before letting me into the building, took me right to the exam room, and all co-pays, scheduling etc were not handled in the office. My mom is 82 and had cancer last year, so many of her appointments are done by telemedicine. She still has to go in for the scans and bloodwork but her Drs do the discussion by telehealth. [ - ] Thinking about NYC public high schools. Are there schools that are reasonably academically rigorous AND somewhat nurturing? Is that a unicorn? My DS is smart and is motivated by having a hardworking peer group, but I think would be lost at one of those big SHS schools. Something smaller and not so pressured may be a better fit, but loosey-goosey and academically weak won't work either. 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

If you mean are there smaller schools, yes. With less pressure if academically selective, no. I don't even think in the suburbs that exists. I think somewhere like Lab or Ischool are less competitive, but most people will say not the same level of academics as SHS or Bard. I know families in Brooklyn whose kids chose Midwood, Brooklyn Millennium, Bard, Murrow and LaGuardia over dif combinations of Stuy, Tech and Latin. Not all of those are "small and nuturing" but people chose those schools for a combination of less pressure/more fun, area of interest, and smaller/more nurturing (more advisory, etc). Kids seem happy with their choices so far. Given what your focus seems, I'd think a place like Brooklyn Millennium might work (if you are in Brooklyn). [ Reply | More ]

But has not been interested in peeing on the potty, so he’s been wearing pull ups. Day camp announced they are opening June 29. DS is dying to go, and needs to be potty trained. We swapped out the diapers for underpants yesterday and have been putting him on the potty every hour. No accidents yet, but he also does not proactively tell us when he needs to go. DS potty trained in 4 days!!! I would never have thought that would be possible, but it can be done. I used that book “Oh crap! Potty training!”, but I do think it’s all about tanking DC up with fluids, getting a sense of the time interval for when he needed to go (every 1.5h for us) and guiding him to the toilet around then. He wore a long tshirt, no pants. And no return to diapers! Pull ups only for emergent situations (eg a flight) or nighttime for a little bit. [ Reply | More ]

ECFS. Working on 3 models -- (1) fully back to school, normal schedule for everyone with precautions like temp checks, masks etc.; (2) hybrid model with the same precautions but limited building capacity so not all students could be in school at the same time; (3) fully remote. Seems most likely that #2 will be the one that will happen. Normal opening day (first Thursday after Labor Day). So much depends on the state rules which are not released yet. [ Reply | More ]

I take it off-label for ADD, although it probably also helped me keep my sanity during COVID. 200 mg slow-release. I noticed changes pretty much the first day, although YMMV. I take a generic, but be sure to stick with whichever brand works for you. When I switched to mail-order delivery a few months ago they gave me a different brand of generic which didn't work and kept me up all night. [ Reply | More ]

I paid $200 for Baby Bodyguards (local company) to install them, not counting materials, because I had a deadbeat landlord and was renting the whole brownstone at the time. [ - ] Ugh, I hit 150 this morning. 10 pounds since Marchh 11. This is the most I've weighed since I was pregnant with dc#3. I've never been a gym bunny and my diet hasn't changed that much since quarantine--no breakfast, salad or a Daily Harvest bowl for lunch (or sometimes nothing), maybe a piece of fruit around 2:30 and then family dinner, easy on the starch, and maybe share a bottle of wine with DH. When I log food I'm usually 1200-1400 calories. Even if I go no alcohol, no grains, no sugar I'm not sure I can cut enough calories. I don't know what to do. I feel absolutely disgusting. 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You are not disgusting. You are alive! This is life. I don't know how tall you are, but something sounds off if you are 150 at that calorie count. Either you are not counting calories correctly (1/2 a bottle of wine is 400-500) or you need to change the way you eat. You should try eating 3 meals (300 cals. each) plus your piece of fruit (75), a Luna bar (150) and some other drink as a sub for the wine (hot cocoa, flavored iced tea, apple cider, Snapple, Gatorade) to wind down at the end of the night. IF is not for everyone. [ Reply | More ]

Pick a couple of these changes to implement until you get back to your goal weight: 1) have a hard-boiled egg white for breakfast to get your metabolism going; 2) limit yourself to one glass of wine at night; 3) make sure you are not eating or drinking any calories after 7 PM if possible; 4) move more, which you can accomplish by standing more, walking more, even fidgeting. Have two or three mini-dance parties per day to your favorite tunes. BTW, it seems like your eating habits are skewed to late in the day and are quite sugary in terms of the fruit and wine. Both of those things are probably hurting you. Can you focus more on lean proteins and greens for a few weeks and try to skew things earlier? [ Reply | More ]

The grain phobia is unfounded, all high-carb populations are slimmer and healthier - read about blue zones. It's impossible to get your fiber just from fruits and vegetables - they are mostly water. You need whole grains and legumes. Whole food, no junk. And alcohol has to go [ Reply | More ]

That's true for people who have normal insulin responses (including I'm sure the blue zone folks), but so many Americans (myself included) are not diabetic but have really damaged responses to insulin, which makes grains really problematic. [ Reply | More ]

I gained 10 lbs too. I tried Weight Watchers but it was too hard. I've gone back to a very low-carb diet (which worked for me when I was trying to lose pregnancy weight) and finally that is working. I crave food less when I eat low-carb. So I try to eat a lot of vegetables, berries, no sugar - except for alcohol! I am not giving up my glass of wine every night, that ritual with my husband is the best part of quarantine lol [ Reply | More ]

I don't think it's strictly enforced by the city, but you are not supposed to leave your apartment. Our building has requested that anyone testing positive informs the board/management company. No use of laundry room, staff will bring packages to your door and collect garbage from your door. There are also volunteers to help you with shopping if needed. Obviously things may be different in yours. [ Reply | More ]

quarantine means you don't leave your apartment. BTDT. Ask friends to p/u drop off stuff. No, you don't go to the laundry room. No you don't get packages. Have them left at your door.
