Friendswithfourpaws is also a wonderful rescue. They rescue dogs in Oklahoma, foster and vaccinate/etc, and transport them to NYC. They have volunteers who foster here so potential new owners can meet rescues, and then for the first 2 weeks after "adoption", it's considered a "trial period;" if all goes well, they then transfer microchip to your name. We used Ruff House Rescue based out on Long Island and they were great. Our dog was rescued and transported from Texas and she's the sweetest. She was 2 years old when we adopted her (lab mix) and it worked perfect for our family since we skipped over the very cute but VERY challenging puppy period.
