Thanks. Not enough at the moment. Things are somewhat better when he’s worn out but not much. He’s been very very difficult for his whole life. He has been in behavioral therapy for a long time. Doesn’t seem to be helping much. Anxiety and ODD are also part of his diagnosis. The meds would be for the defiance and aggression. It's not specifically about ADHD but The Explosive Child by Ross Greene is supposed to be good. BTW I and both my sibs were medicated for ADD starting at 8/9. Medication really helped with managing impulses and emotional volatility but ramped up anxiety/intrusive thoughts. I stopped medicating in my late twenties when my executive functioning had matured and I didn't need any more support than strong coffee. Good luck, start with low doses, monitor carefully, stop if necessary, and don't let anyone shame you. You and DS are both doing your best. [ Reply | More ]

I have 2 female friends both single, not from wealth families who retired at 40. That was about 10 years ago. Sometimes it is hard for us to relate. A previous job put me in touch with leaders of the FIRE movement (Financial Independence, Retire Early). The ones who will make it to death without having to work again are not the people traveling to Europe or going to hot new restaurants. They prioritize not working above all else, and the trade off is any shred of luxury. [ Reply | More ]

Agreed unlikely it was “retiring.” This is the age when families prepare for college, getting kids set up in life, caring for elderly parents and then their own retirement. I have a friend who fits that “retirement” category and I’m not wholly convinced he’s thrilled with it nor is his wife. I’m not crying for them but the reality of elder care, college etc etc and of course health insurance is real, and when you are living a certain lifestyle that can be hard to maintain for the rest of yours and your kids’ lives. Of course if someone truly made hundreds of millions of dollars I get it. But even if I had $20m I would be wary of retirement in my 40’s - not because of my costs of life but because of succession and elder care planning. [ Reply | More ]

MD Mom. I thought long a hard about this and realized that retirement is not the right goal. For me, a focused Type A personality, not having a structure and purpose in my day would be deadly. I need to be needed, to feel important, to lead other people on my team. Charity or reading or exercise or gardening is not going to do it for me. I am the happiest when I work at 60% workload: still feel needed, but have time to do other things without being compensated like academic pursuits, teaching, writing, exercise, occasional facial pre-covid, etc. I think FIRE movement has it right: once you get to the point that you don't care about how much you make you work for fun. I am not there yet, but I notice that I start choosing responsibilities not only based on financial incentive. I am lucky to actually love what i do (when I am not stressed or overworked), I hope you do too, OP. [ Reply | More ]

Or if you have a boss who essentially thinks his employees are gullible or can't read or are just desperate enough to come in to work at a non-essential, Phase 2 business (yes, I looked up what the firm does on the state website, and we are by no means stage 1), and has been for weeks! (In essence, the employees have him by the b****, but he doesn't know it.) [ Reply | More ]

Retail - curbside pickup. This is kind of a big deal. Though I'm curious when stores will actually have any inventory. The stores I've walked past still have the same items and window displays that were in there in March. (Not to mention how much is boarded up now because of looting). [ Reply | More ]

Just because a store has followed the rules and not done the (non-essential) work of adjusting their window display doesn't mean they don't have access to inventory. I've bought a number of things from local stores -- delivery only -- since they had to shut down, including books released since March. They're getting stuff. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe proper games/scrimmages are out of the picture for the time being, but coaches can do drills that are distanced (not just soccer, but baseball and softball and other field sports). [ - ] A bigger issue than whether schools will reopen this fall is whether they will stay open. If a school has to close for a week whenever somebody gets the virus, then large schools like BT, Stuy, and BS will be closed until a vaccine is found. The likelihood of someone in a school getting the virus is proportional to the size of the school. In a school with 2,000+ students, there will almost always be at least one person getting the virus each week. 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think students and parents may need to be more flexible and accept that they may not get their ideal schedule. Maybe they can keep all or most kids together in core classes and have limited numbers moving in the halls if they are doing a subject in a different "track"? [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, I think the best high schools can do is have fewer students changing classrooms at a time (eg. keep freshman/sophomore classes together in the same room for core requirements that don't need special facilities like labs or studios). It gets harder for upperclassmen where there are more electives, APs etc. [ Reply | More ]

Some schools are talking about moving to a "block" schedule, which is more like what happens in college. Instead of a class meeting 5x/wk for 40 minutes each time, it would meet 2x/wk for 90 minutes. That is just an example but you get the point -- less transitions, less time in the hallways. There is also talk of having only 2 grades in the building at a time. So it could be half days, or it could be one week in the building, one week at home. [ Reply | More ]
