How much exercise does he/she get? 6 is young for ADHD medication. Do you have a mini trampoline? Pogo stick? Easy ways to burn a ton of energy in a small space. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. Not enough at the moment. Things are somewhat better when he’s worn out but not much. He’s been very very difficult for his whole life. He’s aggressive toward us and his sibling, and we are at our wits end. At what age do people start medication generally? His therapist is pushing for it somewhat. [ Reply | More ]

Is he in behavioral therapy? Is the aggression the reason to medicate? Because that could be ADHD (impulsivity) or some other behavioral issue. [ Reply | More ]

He has been in behavioral therapy for a long time. Doesn’t seem to be helping much. Anxiety and ODD are also part of his diagnosis. The meds would be for the defiance and aggression. I don’t think he can pay attention in school either but I’m less worried about that at this stage in life. [ Reply | More ]

It's not specifically about ADHD but The Explosive Child by Ross Greene is supposed to be good. BTW I and both my sibs were medicated for ADD starting at 8/9. Medication really helped with managing impulses and emotional volatility but ramped up anxiety/intrusive thoughts. I stopped medicating in my late twenties when my executive functioning had matured and I didn't need any more support than strong coffee. Good luck, start with low doses, monitor carefully, stop if necessary, and don't let anyone shame you. You and DS are both doing your best. [ Reply | More ]
