PPP is a loan, not a grant. To have the loan forgiven, there's paperwork that requires you to provide records of what you spent on payroll, rent, etc. [ Reply | More ]

What about people who got it and didn’t need it - they will show they spent it on things they already could pay for because they lost no business, eg rent and payroll - these are the people I know. They got the money and it is business as usual and have a pile of extra money [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] DH is depressed and has been for many years. He has basically refused treatment- except for when I give him an ultimatum and he goes for three sessions with a therapist and comes up with an excuse to stop. Understandably it is worse in this time without leaving the house or weekly socializing- and harder on our entire family because he is irritable and just wants to stay in a dark room watching TV for hours. He has a few good hours each day and can be a great father and husband- but there is no way of knowing how many hours or when it will switch. I’m heartbroken and at a loss about what to do. 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

That's just unacceptable. I get that when depressed, people are unmotivated - but at some point you have to take some personal responsibility for your life. I'd seriously consider cutting ties with someone who won't even take basic steps to make changes. [ Reply | More ]

Good reminder for me to watch Legally Blonde tonight! I'll never forget how one of my dad's friends was making one of the movie and my dad stepped in and said "Oh, that movie about the bimbo? The one who graduated with a 4.0 from a CA state school, found a goal and went for it?? And then she got into Harvard? And people there were awful but she proved herself, and pulled herself up even after getting harassed? And then dumped the jerk boyfriend? Is that the bimbo we're talking about???" To be fair, he had to take me and my friends to the movies and he watched them with us, so sometimes he got invested :) He won't admit it, but he likes the Princess Diaries too. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Renting house this summer in CT. Owner plans to disinfect house (hired a company) with chlorine dioxide before we move in. I did some research. It's EPA approved but I'm still not sure which is worse: Covid or the toxic chemicals? WWYD? It's our choice 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

How old are your DCs? Are they likely to lick and the walls and the floors? As long as you don't move in within minutes of the chorine dioxide treatment, I'd think it would be fine. [ Reply | More ]

That sounds really unnecessary. They should just do a regular cleaning. For extra precaution, you could leave the house empty for a day or so and/or wipe down surfaces like knobs and switches an extra time. [ Reply | More ]

You must read The Round House by Louise Erdrich as well as LaRose. I read a lot and these are both remarkable family stories and she’s a gifted writer. I’ll add Freedom by Jonathan Franzen. Sing Unburied Sing by Jesymn Ward and Savage the Bones also by Jesmyn Ward. Swing Time by Zadie Smith. Life After Life by Kate Atkinson (amazing especially if you like world war two stories and this one is different). Commonwealth and The Dutch House both by Ann Patchett. My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante (I was slow to the party on these but they’re a standout and beloved for a reason). A Constellation of Vital Phenomenon by Anthony Marra. Did You Ever Have a Family by Bill Clegg (so good) Imagine Me Gone by Adam Hasett (very moving). [ Reply | More ]

I prefer non-fiction, so would recommend Daughters and Rebels by Jessica Mitford, and The Six by Laura Thompson (which is a biography of the Mitford sisters). The Romanovs, by Simon Sebastian Montefiore, is about the history of the Romanov family from 1613-1918–it’s a massive biography, but very well written and really focuses on the personalities of the various family members as well as the roles they played in Russian history. The Cairo Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz hands down should be on your list just like the other excellent recs by others. The Cairo Trilogy tells the tale of an upper class Egyptian family through multiple generations with changes to the modern history of Egypt as the backdrop. It is superbly written. You will come to develop complicated views of members of the family much like in real life with one’s own family. They are endearing, shocking, cruel, naive, innocent, sweet, loyal, but ultimately loving all at once. Mahfouz won the Nobel in 1988. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] We have been out of city since mid-March as DH has an underlying health condition. DCs and I are returning on Sunday for a few days for medical appointments then heading back to our home upstate. DCs want to do something for door men and building staff - we are in a rental building. They suggested pizza, though that means not all will be there to get it. Should we also consider a mid-year tip for each of them in light of the circumstances? We are fortunate to live in a building with such a great crew and would like to recognize their efforts in this difficult time. Our staff have been lucky but understand that there have been at least 40 doormen who've died during this crisis. TIA for any and all suggestions. 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

MId year tip would be great. Even if they are getting paid, their household may have taken a hit. When our cleaner came back, we gave her back pay (we tried to do it weekly but she does not take venmo and would not swing by for it). She kept saying by text that it was not right for her to get paid for not working. When she finally came back, we put that weeks cash on the table and the back pay in a thank you card, thanking her for holding our spot. She left a post it note with a thank you when she left, texted thank you when she got home, sent a mailed thank you card the next week, and yesterday, three weeks later, (not her day with us) left a potted plant on our front door. It meant so much more to her than I even realized. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My daughter has a red mark behind her ear. It started like a pimple, then got bigger and itchy like a mosquito bite. Then, it got smaller, then back to mosquito bite size yesterday. Today, she developed a lump next to it (like a swollen lymph node about a 1/4 of an inch away). It hurts. Any ideas? No fever, nausea nor rash.
