They are considering the following: Zoom parent interviews. Joining online classes for observations or watching school made videos of child. ISAAGNY report. Zoom test administered by a psychologist. [ Reply | More ]

Schools are still working to develop a plan - so they said during the Parents League kindergarten fair. Anyone who tells you schools ARE doing X, Y, or X at this point either works in admission at a school (in which case they should clarify which school) or they are speculating. If you want to know how schools are handling things, speak to the schools - many started online tours last month, and some may continue through the summer. [ Reply | More ]

Me neither, but I've been dreaming about it. Working from home with DC requires me to constantly choose between prioritizing my DC or work. My work has only ever been a means to support my family. While it's sometimes satisfying, I find it pointless and redundant. It was fine when I was in an office away from my family and there was nothing else to do, but it's practically torture now. If you get into K, you are set through 12th grade graduation. And it's a great school. And it's FREE. Literally will save you millions compared to private, and will save years of worry about testing and admissions in 5th, 8th, etc...my DS made it to the 2nd round. Agree. Cons are - kids coming from all over (though by HS that's true of every school), and awful facilities. I can't think of any other cons. I guess it could be too hard for some kids, but if you don't prep your kid to the gills and s/he gets in for 7th, it's likely a good fit. [ Reply | More ]

We used uboxes.com. It seemed cheaper, but I didn't realize that all of their boxes are generally squares - even the big ones (with the exception of the hanging/garment boxes). We're hiring movers (but packing ourselves) so it won't affect us much, but the sizes are a bit more cumbersome. I still need to buy some of the tall boxes from Home Depot - we have some things that just don't fit in a square box. I do like their room-specific packing tape (different colors with room name on it), though, and we bought a "room package" that includes packing paper, bubble wrap, etc. Their regular packing tape is junk, though - you're better off buying Duck brand (or similar) from Amazon or another site. I got the "fragile" and "heavy" labels from Amazon, too. [ Reply | More ]

This has absolutely been my experience. They're quick to email parents to tattle about something your kid did that annoyed them (your son interrupted me during quiet reading time) but questions you have about things that matter to you get ignored. And heaven forbid you ask for advice about how to actually help your kid learn something they don't get, since parents are expected to fill in all the gaps in their kids' understanding of the material - the answer is always "just have them practice more on line. Or here is the list of teachers who are happy to tutor your kid after school for $75 an hour." [ Reply | More ]

I think it's fine when the listing is empty, it gives you a sense of size. I think it's funny / weird when they show the current decor and then wipe it out and show a different kitchen or different furniture. They show you both versions, as if to say, look at this person's horrible taste, wouldn't it be so much better with this all white furniture. [ Reply | More ]

OP: fortunately they do not assume that every kid has access to outdoor (which is good), but then the activities are like weird games that kids set up around the house, which means that every 20 minutes my kid calls me to find her some plastic cups or a bucket while I'm trying to work. What's the point? There's no team building in doing activities alone, there's no exercise...Now my kid is upset because she didn't score enough points in her last activity. [ Reply | More ]

Our DC's HS did a Field Day but they completely rethought what it meant. They announced where each senior is going to HS, with a pic of them and the school name on screen, then they did timed scavenger hunts with the MS buddies. My DC probably got more exercise that morning, racing around looking for things like paper clips and pajamas, than he did in the entire rest of the quarantine. From what we could see, it was pretty great, he had fun with friends and it brought the kids together for something other than classes. [ Reply | More ]

How frequently do you speak to them under normal circumstances? I don't know about you, but each day is insane for me. Work plus home schooling plus worrying about everything that's going on in the world is really exhausting. I pretty much never want to do catch up calls...especially if it's a friend I haven't talked to in a while where I know it's going to be an hour call at minimum. Are you calling them or are you texting? Give us a few more details. But my first inclination is to just let them get back to you when they have time. I don't think them being most likely overwhelmed right now says anything about you or your friendship. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Not that often under normal circumstances but neither of them have young children who they're home schooling. One isn't working at all. But I do see your point about having nothing left at the end of the day. I've been there and I get it. It's just that one had been the initiator w/ me and had previously indicated that weekly calls would be good for her. The other one had indicated that she is often alone and has too much free time so that's where I'm confused. But who knows, maybe they're both struggling and just don't want to talk. [ Reply | More ]

When you say 'weekly calls would be good for her' - are you saying she asked you to do weekly arranged calls? Or did you ask her what would work and she answered 'weekly.' I'm just asking because with a few of my friend groups we set up weekly or every 2 week zoom calls and they got to be way too much very quickly. Everyone has all sorts of things going on with managing these days and it was stressful knowing every Thursday night we had to hop on and kind of rehash last week's call. If I were you, I would just leave it and let your friends reach out when they have time. [ Reply | More ]

The weekly calls were her idea (though I was happy to oblige). She's got some crappy stuff going on in her life and I was happy to listen and offer support. Sorry this is happening to you but I think is a symptom of what's happening right now. People are feeling fragile, they are worried for their safety and their jobs. They feel like since you've been vunerable w each other on the past, a talk is going to unleash all those issues and they just aren't ready to do that. Either that or they are just generally overwhelmed and dropping the ball. One of my close friends hasn't spoken to me 1:1 since this started. (We've been in group chats and few group texts.) Everytime we have a plan to catch up she gets busy, is too exhausted, or claims to have forgotten. I think she just can't handle an intense convo and is avoiding me. Trying to have compassion but also frustrated. [ Reply | More ]

I understand that. I have also thought that these 2 people may see me as having things a bit easier in my life right now and that may be preventing them reaching out. Honestly this is very helpful for me. Just needed some reassurance so thank you:). AND - I hope your friend does reach out to you soon:) [ Reply | More ]

Well, by putting people in touch -- giving access to information about a job, about a candidate -- you are not taking responsibility for whether or not it would be a good fit. Given what is going on in the broader society, it would be more worthwhile to have (non graded) instruction about some of the issues. Watching a movie such as the 13th amendment would be instructive [ Reply | More ]

It is pretty pointless. Many schools and teachers, especially the traditional ones, lose sight of what education is and can’t think much beyond grading. One of the best teachers my kids had - still talk about it years later - was a social studies teacher who would interrupt the curriculum when there was a major event and teach around the event: causes, consequences. Don’t have him do the work. Others want their kids to have work to keep them busy. Teachers have different kids and families that all have different needs. [ Reply | More ]

And also a job to do: to teach kids every day they are in session. Chances are they are following their lesson plan that was mapped out before COVID, not just throwing random work at kids. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I'm so sad today, we have twin boys who are almost 6yo. They started K at a great private in September and we really love it. We knew that one of our boys was going to have learning issues, he's always been way behind his brother, but we've had a few meetings with the school about it and they've recommended that we move him to a specialized school. We live in midtown on the west side, should we move both to keep them together, and what schools should we apply to for one versus both? Anyone been through this, please tell me it's going to be ok 126 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Thanks, I guess I'm wondering if there's a school where they could be together as twins and siblings but each get the stimulation and support they need. I feel like if we split them up and one goes to a special school it's going to be really tough when they're older. [ Reply | More ]

np don't think if it in that way. think of putting each kid in the best school for his needs even if it is diff schools. I know twins where one is in mainstream school and one is at specialized school. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, do not keep them together. In this situation, they are different individuals with different needs and tracks. Help them develop their own identities. Keeping them together [ Reply | More ]

^ in terms of which school to apply, this needs to be driven by DC’s needs. Get inputs from the school, do a neuropsych, make your own observations about DC and go from there [ Reply | More ]

Good point. Sometimes though, the input from an experienced teacher can be valuable, to be taken as just one piece of the puzzle. Similarly, neuropsych are far from perfect either, especially at such a young age (BTDT). I would treat everything as a piece of a puzzle [ Reply | More ]
