We are relatively new to the city and will be applying to K, so I wanted to ask what makes Hunter so special, besides its selectivity? I know a couple of families who can afford private and were offered spots, but went with Hunter. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It’s selective, goes through 12 and it’s FREE [ Reply | More ]

I have to dcs there and I dont know if this is right, but its FREE, teachers are great, parents are very involved and the common factor is that the children want to learn. Also, good socioeconomic diversity which is important to us [ Reply | More ]

A decade ago, DD didn’t even make it to Round 2 for K but got a perfect G&T score a month later and was accepted at both Trinity and Brearley (we are not wealthy or connected). She is killing it at TT. [ Reply | More ]

All that proves is that Hunter has the smartest kids of your smart daughter did not even get into the school. [ Reply | More ]

It has the smuggest parents in NYC, which is saying a lot. [ Reply | More ]

There certainly are. But the Hunter parents are the worst, and they have pretty stiff competition. If I hear "The smartest kids in NYC! And it's free!" one more time from a hunter parent I will vomit. [ Reply | More ]

Haha, there's nothing wrong with liking your DC's school, but there's just something about the Hunter parents. [ Reply | More ]

If you get into K, you are set through 12th grade graduation. And it's a great school. And it's FREE. Literally will save you millions compared to private, and will save years of worry about testing and admissions in 5th, 8th, etc...my DS made it to the 2nd round. I asked him how it went and he said he just sat on the floor and didn't say much and nobody was surprised when he got dinged. [ Reply | More ]

Try again for 7th! My DS got dinged in K, accepted in 7th with zero prep. [ Reply | More ]

haha. Same boat. I asked my DD how it went and she said she didn't like it. She is in 1st grade now and still will mention the H play date sometimes with disgust. I'm not sure what happened, but the school didn't make a good impression on her, lol. Oh well. She loves her current school and is excited for her brother to join her in 2 years (I'm not even going to apply to H for him). [ Reply | More ]

My DD got dinged at 2nd round too probably because she didn’t respond to answers. I was disappointed but obviously moved on from it. It would’ve been great not having to worry about MS and HS admissions. That’s really it. Have one at Hunter already and like every other school there are pros and cons. [ Reply | More ]

Agree. Cons are - kids coming from all over (though by HS that's true of every school), and awful facilities. I can't think of any other cons. I guess it could be too hard for some kids, but if you don't prep your kid to the gills and s/he gets in for 7th, it's likely a good fit. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I have heard (from a Hunter parent) that some STEM and foreign languages classes are weak. [ Reply | More ]

My DC is only in 7th but the foreign language is FAR above what he was getting in regular public MS. I can't speak for how it compares to private. Really like the teacher, too. [ Reply | More ]

Totally agree on all fronts. It’s akin to a top suburban school with like 80% top students and 20% other above avg students [ Reply | More ]

This. It's the kids that make it really great at the end of the day. When I sat in on the classes I was blown away - not by what the class was doing per se, but by the level of engagement and thoughtfulness of the kids' comments. [ Reply | More ]

Answered above. In many respects, it’s tougher to get into a CW due to the numbers. Pros- small community, good teachers, great principal Cons- small community, students spread out all over the city [ Reply | More ]

Really underwhelming facilities. Foreign languages and STEM are weak. College exmissions are not as strong as TT private. We know several families whose kids got into Hunter and chose private. [ Reply | More ]
