My kid is finishing eighth grade. Since there is no graduation this year he already received his diploma, but the teachers are still assigning graded work every day. Whats the point? Its so stupid, just so the teachers can justify what they're doing I guess? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

So these extra seven days of assignments will make the difference for them come September? Cause that will teach them how to really buckle down? [ Reply | More ]

np: they’re required to have a certain number of instructional days. Would you rather they watch movies? [ Reply | More ]

Given what is going on in the broader society, it would be more worthwhile to have (non graded) instruction about some of the issues. Watching a movie such as the 13th amendment would be instructive [ Reply | More ]

My DC went to a K-8, he graduated and got a diploma. It was a sweet ceremony, the parents and teachers all enjoyed the bittersweet moment and the kids were all excited. [ Reply | More ]

It is pretty pointless. Many schools and teachers, especially the traditional ones, lose sight of what education is and can’t think much beyond grading. One of the best teachers my kids had - still talk about it years later - was a social studies teacher who would interrupt the curriculum when there was a major event and teach around the event: causes, consequences. Isn’t this the opposite? Mom is saying that grading is over so why are the kids still learning? [ Reply | More ]

Don’t have him do the work. Others want their kids to have work to keep them busy. Teachers have different kids and families that all have different needs. [ Reply | More ]

And also a job to do: to teach kids every day they are in session. Chances are they are following their lesson plan that was mapped out before COVID, not just throwing random work at kids. [ Reply | More ]
