how do you feel about/ think about helping friends get jobs? I feel like it's a great way if you can to help people and always try to help folks - even if it's not at my company, it's just super important to me. And I am shocked at how many people do not prioritize this. what do you do? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think it's weird. You should get a job on your own merit. As someone who is an introvert with not many friends, I find it totally unfair that people give jobs to their friends and family. [ Reply | More ]

so if you knew about someone hiring for a job and a friend was looking for a job, you wouldn't link them together? [ Reply | More ]

Merit? How are you measuring merit? Merit is a myth. A fancy school on a resume, where the person's grandfather might have given a building? Networks matter, and using them to help people in need, especially people with less access to powerful networks, is important. [ Reply | More ]

I'm married to a long-time freelancer and I think the societal attitude about this has really changed in the past decade or so. People have moved from "let me help you out by connecting you" to what the above post said... essentially "you need work so you must not be deserving of help." Please keep doing what you're doing, it's so, so important. [ Reply | More ]

I feel any referral I make comes with my personal endorsement, so if I don't think highly of your work (even if we are friends) I won't do it. [ Reply | More ]

I don't mind referring people or putting people in contact with each other, but I am not doing follow up, etc. for the person.....I have found that many people want to be spoon fed and also want you to basically drop a job in their laps and I cannot/will not do that [ Reply | More ]

It becomes awkward when the friend isn't up to par. [ Reply | More ]

Well, by putting people in touch -- giving access to information about a job, about a candidate -- you are not taking responsibility for whether or not it would be a good fit. It's the company's decision who to hire, and the company's responsibility if it goes bad. Of course, you shouldn't overclaim for friends or lie about their capabilities, but otherwise, it's not on you. [ Reply | More ]

I give advice freely, but people gotta be willing to put in the work and time. Finding a job requires stamina, positivity, and humility. Anyone who has those qualities doesn't need much from me. [ Reply | More ]

Agree with the job hunter. It's tough out there. Every connection helps. I try to help when I can and would hope others would feel the same way too. But in my experience, most don't help. [ Reply | More ]

Of course I help - with advice, my network, if I've heard of an opportunity. Connecting a good candidate with a job is a favor for both sides of the equation! I so appreciated the people who met with me to chat about the industry and help keep me connected when I was looking so I make sure to do that too. [ Reply | More ]
