If school starts again in September, I am not really comfortable with my 16-year-old taking the subway to school. He has offered to bike from our home in Fort Greene Brooklyn to his school in Soho. Would you be comfortable with your teen biking in Downtown Brooklyn/ Manhattan or is better to just risk your child catching the virus on the subway? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My DS has to commute too. But I figured the fact that he's in school with other kids who will be taking the subway, there's no difference. He might as well take the subway too, and wear a mask. Not ideal but the kids have to adjust. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think this is quite right. Being on the subway is much different than being in classrooms. [ Reply | More ]

but if some kids are taking a subway - others will be in the classroom with them and exposed to whatever kids riding subway were exposed to [ Reply | More ]

Do either of you have the ability to drop him off early at school in a car? I assume his school starts around 8 and your work starts around 9? [ Reply | More ]

Yes, we both worked from home pre-covid. His school starts at 9am so I won't be able to drop him off in the morning unless I dropped him off an hour early. [ Reply | More ]

I wonder if parents will get together and hire cars or mini-vans to take groups of kids together. [ Reply | More ]

100%. the subway, even with covid, is way less of a riskfor a 16 year old than getting hit on his bike. there will be a TON of traffic and lots more bikers. i would expect a big increase in accidents. the subway with a mask, and maybe latex gloves that he throws away when he gets to school [ Reply | More ]

This! Sew or purchase many more masks. He wears one the subway and tosses it in a wetbag. Then a clean one for school and a 3rd for the way back. [ Reply | More ]

We’re a big biking family and I wouldn’t allow this. You need to be a really smart and experienced biker to be doing this daily and you also wouldn’t be 100% certain that he wears a helmet the whole way. [ Reply | More ]

The good thing is that I am 100% confident that he would wear his helmet everyday. He is very cautious. [ Reply | More ]

OP here: I agree that biking in the city during rush hour is dangerous. I am thinking that one option is that he could do citi bike across the Manhattan Bridge and the walk to to school from there. Walking the hole way would take over an hour but biking across the bridge would significantly shorten his trip. [ Reply | More ]
