What are the odds this will work? DS (3 years, 4 months) has been pooping on the potty since January without a single accident. But has not been interested in peeing on the potty, so he’s been wearing pull ups. Day camp announced they are opening June 29. DS is dying to go, and needs to be potty trained. We swapped out the diapers for underpants yesterday and have been putting him on the potty every hour. No accidents yet, but he also does not proactively tell us when he needs to go. Can I get this kid completely potty trained in 3 weeks? He knows he can’t go to camp unless he gets it done. TIA for any experience / tips etc! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

yes! We did the same. Put dc on potty once an hour, asked often "do you have to go", and used m&m rewards. We used the small on the floor potty to make it easier to go on their own. [ Reply | More ]

I think you'll be fine! He may have an accident or two at first but he'll get the hang of it. They have to expect that 3 years olds will have some accidents. [ Reply | More ]

Best way us to leave him completely bare bottom for 3 days (wear a lining t-shirt). Keep putting him on potty at regular intervals. [ Reply | More ]

DS potty trained in 4 days!!! I would never have thought that would be possible, but it can be done. I used that book “Oh crap! Potty training!”, but I do think it’s all about tanking DC up with fluids, getting a sense of the time interval for when he needed to go (every 1.5h for us) and guiding him to the toilet around then. He wore a long tshirt, no pants. And no return to diapers! Pull ups only for emergent situations (eg a flight) or nighttime for a little bit. [ Reply | More ]

You can do it and they'll be ready for some accidents - he doesn't have to be perfect! [ Reply | More ]

OP - thank you all for the encouragement! Another accident-free day today, but he resists when we make him sit in the potty. Also, we went out for about 2 hours, road in the car seat, took a walk at a park, road back home. No issues. Told me he loves big boy pants :D. (Also, tons of m&m rewards, and a promise of a new transformer if he starts telling us when he has to go). Fingers crossed! [ Reply | More ]

Try having him stand to pee?! Also, just want to mention that at some point they figure out when they need to pee and when they don't so if you say "time to sit on the potty" and they refuse, you'll want to accept their answer [ Reply | More ]

I would say yes, our nanny potty trained my DS when he was just 3 yo because camp required it, she just let him run around the hour for a couple of days with no pants. She started during the week and by the weekend he was all set, we did pull-ups at night for a while just in case. [ Reply | More ]
