grilled chicken can easily be repurposed for another meal. Once a week, dinner is "clean out the fridge." We don't all eat the same thing that night because I don't ever have that much of any one item left over. certain foods freeze well (chili, lasagna) so make double and freeze half. [ Reply | More ]

We do semi-cooking, e.g., buy fresh pasta and add sautéed veggies and sauce, or get some prepared food at Fairway or something, or get a pizza crust at the farmer's market and put stuff on it. DH and I both are working long hours and DC is a teen, we don't have time for a big production, some nights when it's really bad we just have cereal and DC has some hot dogs. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Etiquette Question Hello Everyone I posted the below on another forum. No one seemed to get the point I am trying to make about etiquette. I am interested in what people think about the below situation. I of course am working from home during this time like so many others. I live with my sister, my mom and niece (who has asthma). I live in Long Island in a large house with a pool. A co-worker who I am close to (I'll call him S) had to come to LI for some reason and asked if he could stop by and visit me, he also planned on visiting other co workers on his day trip. He stopped by, we talked outside at a distance in my yard, we both wore masks, I gave him a tour of my garden. He left to visit another co-worker I will call C. The next day C messages me on Slack offering to visit me at my house where we will "work from home together". This request annoyed me, S who I am quite close to doesn't understand why this also annoyed me, he says he did rave about my house and showed C a video of my pool. Am I being unreasonable to be upset at both S and C. Also C has a general "it's your job to entertain me" vibe. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I just think it's a bit of an overreaction to be upset. I think you can just acknowledge to yourself that you know the type of person S is, so you shouldn't be surprised. You watched him video your garden, so you knew he was excited by it. Maybe you knew he was going to C next, so it's not a reach that he might share it. All you have to do in this scenario is say 'Oh, C, yeah, we're are still following social distancing rules and not having people over.' That's it. She keeps pushing, just repeat. There doesn't have to be any drama here. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn’t read too much into it. Sounds like S thought you had a pretty pool and took a pictures and showed C when he visited with them. C is probably bored and thought it’d be nice change-up to work at your place since you have a nice home. That said, I understand your issue with boundaries and coworkers. It’s so weird right now with everyone working from home. The familiarity and privacy thing gets blurred. This particular instance/request from C is easy to shut down firmly yet politely. I might explain to S why it bothered me but it might be too subtle for others to understand. [ Reply | More ]

I also had no idea. Apparently, in other parts of the country, they follow the Renzuli model - pulling kids up when they need it, but on a temporary basis (perhaps limited by time or by lesson) - so I am told by educators in other states. I grew up in another state and we still had tracking through the early 2000s! [ Reply | More ]

Our school is due to get a specific report tomorrow based on our population and building of how many people can be in the building and in each room at once. There was a lot of concern regarding ICT classes and paras but nothing resolved. No movement in schools- to cafeteria, recess, cluster classes. We didn't get any answers about staff schedules but seems like we'll be in FT. [ Reply | More ]

OP- this is confusing to me too. Because if we as teachers are also supposed to be conducting the online learning, our workload is doubled. One administrator at my school said she believed there are going to be cameras and the kids at home would be following along in real time. She has a tendency to speak without knowing though, and this seems like it would be a technological impossibility for the DOE. It also just wouldn't work at all considering how dependant most of my (elementary) teaching is on interaction, shared responsibilities, etc. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Help me navigate a situation tactfully? We had a wonderful housecleaner who left us for a big company cleaning gig last winter. She referred us to a new cleaner who is sweet and totally adequate, but not as good. Then Covid hit. We have been paying this cleaner at 50% as cleaning is her only income. She still hasn't returned, presumably because she's not comfortable. Today I just got a text from cleaner 1 who says the job she left us for ended up not being a good fit, and would we be a reference for her for housecleaning work? I would LOVE for her to come back. They obviously know each other as cleaner 1 referred cleaner 2 to us, though I don't think they're close. If cleaner 1 agrees to come back to work for us, how would you tactfully tell cleaner 2 you don't need her to come back, which also means you're no longer paying her? Is this wrong of me? 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't think you need to give some big excuse. You can tell her that you no longer need her services as of whatever date you choose and thank her for her time. Add that you would be a reference for her if needed. [ Reply | More ]

My ten year old has been working his way through the Simpsons. It's led to some innapropriate comments (espeically about drinking, lots of drunk jokes in the Simposons) but in gereral he's become a more pleasant person during the shutdown. Dh and I have really focused on manors and appropraite behavior with our kids since we are with them all the time to reinforce it now. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I wish my son were into The Simpsons. He's very hot and cold about it, but I think it's a good show to like since it has universal appeal. All he wants to do is make makeshift drums and talk in a voice that makes him sound dumb. He learned it from a YouTube show we have since banned. But every day is just an exercise in pushing boundaries -- and we go out and move around every day. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Maybe it's kids in general. We decamped out to Greenwich because I thought it would be nice for him to have a yard and lots of space to scooter, etc. And he likes the yard and our evening walks, but during the day, if he doesn't have a Zoom call, it's drumming and searching for videos. I'm still in the city, in an apt with no outdoor space, and we work full time so can't take the kids outside for any stretches until work/school is done... but I know the biggest thing that's missing for my (normally very athletic) kids is just straight-up "play." Like physical running around, rough-housing, role-playing, etc. We take them out to the park and they can run and play catch a bit there - but it is all so supervised and structured. There is no time or space for them to just be careless, destructive, skin a knee, etc. You've definitely got the space and opportunity in the burbs, but I get your kid's reluctance to go all in if he doesn't have a same-age playmate to play with. When school is out, would you be open to hosting a friend for a week or so? [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Will someone help me interpret this statement from the California State University System? Are they saying they are test-optional or test-blind? "This temporary change of admission requirements will also apply to impacted CSU campuses and programs. Campuses and programs designated as impacted may utilize higher “a-g" GPA thresholds for applicants, as well as identify supplemental criteria and their relative weights, in making admission decisions. However, in no case will standardized test scores be utilized in making admissions decisions for applicants during the 2021-2022 academic year." 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Sounds like the CA GPA is what matters and that you can submit test scores but they won't be the decisive factor. [ Reply | More ]

What worries me is that "in no case will standardized test scores be utilized in making admissions decisions." I was hoping a strong score would help DC stand out from students who don't submit at all. I knew it wasn't going to affect the eligibility index score. [ Reply | More ]

I really struggled to find my 7th grader a blazer this winter. We ended up getting some Calvin Klein and Michael Kors that were a decent fit. DS is 5'6" and 96 lbs--size 12 was absurdly short and he was swimming in the size 14. [ Reply | More ]

I hired “the best” nanny recommended by a good friend. And she took my children shoplifting. My suggestions: check multiple references, make a contract that clearly states responsibilities and vacation days and pay structure, pay on the books, drop in often and at different times, trust your instincts. I did and she is a dream. Over-ask (be very specific about what you are looking for) in your initial post - you will get hundreds of responses. If you are planning to be on the books, make sure to put that up front. I did a background check and spoke to four references. Google the references to make sure they are real (not just friends of the person). We also did a two week trial period while I was home. I would come and go during the day during the trial period. I also had family members drop in unexpectedly to see how they felt about her. We did do a nanny cam, but we told her about it. [ Reply | More ]
