Help me navigate a situation tactfully? We had a wonderful housecleaner who left us for a big company cleaning gig last winter. She referred us to a new cleaner who is sweet and totally adequate, but not as good. Then Covid hit. We have been paying this cleaner at 50% as cleaning is her only income. She still hasn't returned, presumably because she's not comfortable. Today I just got a text from cleaner 1 who says the job she left us for ended up not being a good fit, and would we be a reference for her for housecleaning work? I would LOVE for her to come back. They obviously know each other as cleaner 1 referred cleaner 2 to us, though I don't think they're close. If cleaner 1 agrees to come back to work for us, how would you tactfully tell cleaner 2 you don't need her to come back, which also means you're no longer paying her? Is this wrong of me? I don't think you need to give some big excuse. You can tell her that you no longer need her services as of whatever date you choose and thank her for her time. Add that you would be a reference for her if needed. [ Reply | More ]

This. You paid her over the break, which is more than a lot of other people didn't. You don't owe her a lifetime of employment. [ Reply | More ]

Cleaner 2: "Hi, we hope you and your family are well. Due to a new situation in our family, we will no longer be needing your cleaning services. We appreciate your time and work. Wishing you the best!" [ Reply | More ]
