Westport has a large and active Jewish community. “Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Westport: There are thought to be anywhere between 11,000 and 15,000 Jewish people living in Westport and Norwalk, which means the population is well over one quarter Jewish. There are ten synagogues within these towns, which often are joined for Jewish communal activities. There is also a Chabad in Westport. Many of the Jews are professionals. Some work locally and many commute to neighboring New York City. There are a few kosher establishments in the area.” [ Reply | More ]

Already, we're behind every other nation in providing daycare and preschools, not they're taking away full time school too! The rich will be just fine, with their private schools and tutors and other homeschooling options they will organize on their days off. The poor will suffer even more. I'm literally devastated over this. Young kids don't suffer as much from covid statistically (with exceptions of course). It's so so unfair to them. Why can't we quarantine older adults and let schools open up? So wrong. 46 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

ITA on both counts. Plus, "pre-existing conditions" is so broad. Obesity, for example, triples your likelihood of severe COVID complications. Over 40% of US adults are obese. Are we going to have kids stay home because their parents are obese and at higher risk? [ Reply | More ]

I agree. And I'm not a COVID-denier, we have been extremely strict about quarantine/social distancing, and I have no desire to jump right back into "normal" life. But something has to give with the children. I have the privilege of WFH, have an education and enough supplies and technology that I won't let my kids fall behind (even though WFH + homeschooling has been an absolute NIGHTMARE). But I'm heartbroken that there are hundreds of thousands of kids who haven't been learning since early March, especially those for whom school was a refuge/safe space. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I've also been very very careful. But at this point, the infection rate in NYC is very low and risks to children are not that bad, less than the flu. How the DOE can consider throwing an entire generation of children under the bus for this is beyond me. [ Reply | More ]

You realize that private school is composed of more than rich people, right? And it also likely won't be in session full-time next year. Not everyone who goes to private school has a non-working parent, or access/finances to support a nanny and/or tutor. I know many in public school who have more money than we do, with more access to those things. You can complain about "the rich" versus "everyone else" but don't throw random assertions in there. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry if you're being so picky. But private school=richer parent body is not what I would call a "random assertion". Of course not every public parent is poor and not even private parent is rich, but that is not what I said. Private schools have much more real estate per student, so they will figure out how to do this much easier and richer parents (public or private) will hire tutors, or have SAHMs, etc. [ Reply | More ]

I think if this continues for more than a semester, it will be the end of public school as a "social good" as we know it. New small private schools will open up immediately to fill the void and only the most disadvantaged students will stay in public. [ Reply | More ]

I don't agree about forcing older adults to quarantine, but I do agree that it is truly the children who will truly suffer. But more than education, it's the kids who are stuck in abusive households who have had no reprieve from whatever abuse they face, and who will continue to suffer through the summer and into the school year. If they are only going in on some kind of alternating schedule, it makes it that much more difficult for educators to see the signs and report. I'm just so incredibly sad for these kids. So what do you propose? Partially remote / blended makes a lot of sense under the circumstances. Kids will still spend some time at school and will still socialize. Completely remote is not good, I agree with this, but putting back over a million kids in crowded public transportation and schools is a recipe for a major second wave if the virus is still around (and it will probably be given how the country has handled this). A half way measure with social distancing will hopefully help mitigate and control the outbreaks. It is not just kids getting sick (and some have preexisting conditions), it is also the teachers, staff and family members [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like you are the one not thinking. By definition, partial remote does not mean that you are staying indoors or locked up all the time or forver. You are out at school part of the time. Odds are there will be a vaccine and/or better therapies in 1 to 2 years. The idea that you just let the virus kill many and potentially overrun healthcare systems (not even considering the impact on healthcare workers) with the attitude of whatever is bizarre. Even quarantines were put in place in the middle ages to stem epidemics. Mitigating nasty epidemics has been around for centuries because the cost, both human and economic, is just too high if you let them run amok. [ Reply | More ]

A few things. With an epidemic disease, it doesn't matter if the kids don't suffer from it as much as long as they are still spreading it. COVID-19 is unpredictable, there's a lot we don't know about post-COVID consequences, and it can kill young, healthy adults without obvious risk factors. So we don't really know that just quarantining older adults will do the trick. What needs to happen on the governmental level is a massive influx of either income support so parents can go to half-time or time off or childcare support, like an Americorps of child care workers who can facilitate distance learning and childmind for one or two households. Makes test and trace much easier, mitigates risk, provides employment... [ Reply | More ]

These aren't deadly situations, have you really never been yelled at by a random stranger or had someone say something stereotypical and rude to you based on your appearance or dress or your kids, etc? How did we become so fragile that we cannot move past a fact that there are some mentally unwell people out there who may say stupid things which we shouldn't necessarily take seriously unless there are direct threats or physical confrontation. Majority of people who do this or so called "Karens" are just mentally unstable individuals [ Reply | More ]

So because they aren't "deadly" people of color have to just take it and deal with it. The woman in the convenience store did nothing except try to pay for her purchase before being told to go back to where she came from and pushed, and whether you think the Asian woman was rude for exercising in someone's way, she was still threatened and also told to go back to where she came from. There are different levels to racism, and you clearly are only willing to accept as true or valid, the situations where the police are called and lives are threatened. If you were in a wheelchair or a little person or gay, and spent your life being "yelled at by random strangers" that included insults aimed at one of those things I guarantee it would be a big deal deal. How small minded to think that it's not a big deal to constantly have people choosing to insult you over things you have no control over like race, and then call it fragility. [ Reply | More ]

That was the past, where we just took it and internalized it and tried our best to not feel defeated and angry. That shit simply does not fly anymore and I sincerely do hope that people on the receiving end of these attacks (and witnesses) continue to video these encounters so those people are forced to deal with the consequences of their behavior, whether through being publication shamed, losing their job, etc. [ Reply | More ]

"IF it's a black woman" which you are not, so you make stupid statements like this as if you know exactly how many times and how things happen. Look, if you live in a neighborhood where many people are saying slurs that upset you and you feel targeted, then you move, right? How needs hostility? What many of these incidences describe are one off encounters with obviously mentally unwell people. In my area usually they are elderly with their set-mind frames that cannot be changed or perhaps even dementia or other issues. It's ok to feel angry, but there is nothing you can do about it and you cannot retaliate against them. And you also cannot reform them. [ Reply | More ]

What can you do about it? You can raise awareness in people who are willing to listen only, and you can change the tides by raising the new generation to be more respectful. But you cannot change people whose minds are set and because it's not a crime and they know it. People know now that they cannot say non-PC remarks at work that would offend anyone's race/gender/sexual orientation/age, etc. They learned by getting fired. You can lynch people with videos, but many of them wouldn't care or even know they were even on camera. There is no law that prohibits people saying things they want in public setting or outside of their home. You cannot arrest people for insulting you verbally, only if they attack you physically. There aren't enough cameras wielded by the socially aware people to capture all this, especially in areas where it's rampant and many people have the same mind frame. But I"m saying there is. Raising your kids right is great, but that's the bare minimum and it goes way beyond that bc we'r still in a fked up place as a country. You talk about it, you file a police report if something happens, you take out your camera if something happens. Of course you won't catch it all, but the fact that a new video is out almost every week in the past few months means that there is more awareness both ways--for the racists that might think twice about going on a public rant over something trivial, and the victims of this behavior who may now think to immediately pull out their camera so they have evidence and not a he said-she said type of situation. I'm on day 17! Yes, stick with it - the first bit is always tough (this is my 6th time) but by halfway through the month you are feeling like a million bucks. Do a lot of meal prep and I'd recommend following Whole30 recipes on instagram as well as Whole30. I've gotten tons of great ideas from there. It is not easy but it's worth it. [ Reply | More ]

one word: PREPARE! make sure you have the right ingredients and snacks in your pantry and some plan of what you will eat for the week. doesn't have to be fancy or fussy, just has to be compliant. if you get stuck without the right stuff, you will go off plan and be mad at yourself! [ Reply | More ]

It's worth it! Our family has done it several times and usually stick with it for more than 30 days. Don't feel like every meal has to be a big production. There are a lot of great recipes, but we often just had baked chicken with roasted potatoes and broccoli. Don't cheat even a tiny bit, especially with sugar. I am a dessert person and was satisfied with tea (Celestial Seasonings Bengal Spice is really sweet!) and a couple of those date roll things after dinner. [ Reply | More ]

Stick with it. You have to give up alcohol too, or it doesn't work. This is a great time to do it though, because you'll mostly be home. It is so much harder to do if you are going out to eat, or have to pick up lunch at the office, etc. [ Reply | More ]

One of the few diet plans I could get behind. Didn't agree with all the eliminations but understood the principal. Eat real food, not processed food. It will simplify your pantry. Plan to start another 30 day cycle myself. I also think that it's okay to have a slip now and then. Ignore the haters that say if you CHEAT you have to start over...people with eating disorders who don't understand that any plan has to be sustainable more than 30 days. [ Reply | More ]

Where are you getting your information from? Were you called out for racist behavior that you are now trying to impart onto any conversation about anything? Standardized tests have been proven to be biased, and if you know the history they did in fact have racist beginnings. However, I still support them but there needs to be something done to level the playing field because that is what's RIGHT AND FAIR. [ - ] What is your opinion: my 89-year-old mother lives in pompano Beach FL Half the year, and comes back to Stamford CT For the summer. She normally comes back at the end of April, but because of Covid, she has remained in FL. She lives alone in FL, me and my siblings make sure she has food delivered to her. She is very much vibrant and alive mentally and does what she can to keep things interesting. She is a major survivor. She wants to come back to CT because she wants to see her family and because most of her friends and acquaintances are leaving the community she lives in. She is worried about getting the virus if she comes up north, but it’s probably going to get more difficult for her if she stays in FL. My brother has offered to rent an RV and drive her home, but I’m not even sure how easy it is these days to get one. She can’t drive in a car because it is almost impossible for her to get in and out of a car to use the bathroom. Also because of her physical situation. It will be hard for her to sit in a car for that long. Any ideas or suggestions? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

It’s called ALDACTONE.. It’s a pretty mild diuretic prescribed for PCOS, that helps lower androgen levels and specifically, can help with hair loss associated with PCOS. It’s super toxic while pregnant, especially for male fetuses, so I would be on top of that. With PCOS, it becomes more symptomatic with weight gain and it in and of itself triggers weight gain, so it’s insidious. Best thing you can do is get on metformin...will regulate your period, help with hair loss and weight gain. This should be your number one question for doc: how is my blood sugar and can we discuss metformin...might not need aldactone after metformin, which is much more effective. [ Reply | More ]
