Most parents are not brave enough to publicly speak out against getting rid of admission screens in NYC schools. Not in light of BLM and being labeled a racist. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

LOL, this is because you do not speak Mandarin and are not privy to conversations in that language. [ Reply | More ]

Ugh, the accusations of racism is OTT. It’s like if you didn’t put a black square on social media, you’re seen as racist. And school screening is not inherently racist, but they’re making it such a racial issue. [ Reply | More ]

Way to trivialize a real issue. [ Reply | More ]

you mean people aren't brave enough to face losing their jobs once their racism is exposed? or, maybe they've realized that they're entirely wrong to support screens. either way, I'm fine with them keeping their thoughts to themselves. [ Reply | More ]

I think every G&T parent should lose their job on account of this, sure! [ Reply | More ]

Lob those kinds of accusations and you’re going to give a very legitimate movement a bad rep. [ Reply | More ]

This is literally exactly what is happening! This person is not a far outlier in their opinion. When they came to "talk to parents" in D15 in Park Slope, the DOE brought posters of Brown vs BofED protesters! [ Reply | More ]

I'm black and i support screened schools. On the few conversations I've been privy to, It's mostly white parents against screens. Makes me wonder if they have underperforming students who don't have a chance of getting into the screened schools so they now want a lottery system. Using rcism as their cover. [ Reply | More ]

You are the only person who can speak up. Everyone else will be too scared to lose their jobs, be accused, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Oh stop it. If you aren't racist, then speak up about whatever you want. If in the process you say or do something that actually is racist, then yes, you will likely be called out for it. It's quite simple. [ Reply | More ]

You're mistaken. People now consider all standardized tests inherently racist. So if you publicly support it for (gasp) children, that makes you a racist in their eyes too. [ Reply | More ]

Where are you getting your information from? Were you called out for racist behavior that you are now trying to impart onto any conversation about anything? Standardized tests have been proven to be biased, and if you know the history they did in fact have racist beginnings. However, I still support them but there needs to be something done to level the playing field because that is what's RIGHT AND FAIR. You are just throwing out random soundbites and claiming that no non-black person can say anything about anything without being labeled racist and that's just not true. [ Reply | More ]

No, I was never called a racist, so I'm not trying to impart anything. I just see what is happening and the DOE isn't actually open to parent discussion. See Carranza's tweet about racist white parents when this was supposed to be open conversation https://www.westsiderag.com/2018/04/30/schools-chancellors-racially-charged-tweet-could-derail-progress-on-parent-led-school-diversity-plan [ Reply | More ]

I don't live in NYC, not wealthy, just middle class, an immigrant myself. I am just appalled by Carranza's tweet. Not a good strategy to shame parents who care about about their childs' education. I guess this shaming strategy works for him for the short term. [ Reply | More ]

Where are YOU getting your info from? Carranza has been very clear that screened schools are effectively racist, and he wants to do away with them. DeBlasio feels the same, though he sent his son to one not long ago. Actually, do did Carranza outside of NYC. [ Reply | More ]

So because Carranza and DeBlasio said so, that means that NO NON-BLACK PERSON can say anything about screened schools or standardized tests? That's what the pp said and that's just not true. [ Reply | More ]

As long as you vehemently post about BLM support on your local moms FB group and routinely shame anyone who was mildly freaked out by early looting or "defund the police" statement, then you should be ok. Feel free. Oh, if you have photos of your kids marching in protests or can post some art they made in support of the movement, even better. [ Reply | More ]
