We have two daughters and a son. Daughters wanted traditional sleep away camp so one is going to Camp Blue star for the summer and the other is going to Catalina island camp. Our son really wants only intellectual sleep away camps. He loved the great nooks program at Stanford last summer but great books is closed this summer. So we desperately need a literary or historical or philosophy or political oriented program where he can live with other 15 year olds for the summer. help us out [ Reply | More ]

My DH and I both FB messenger, even more during the pandemic. Some of the reasons: you don't have someone's personal phone number or email but need to contact them for something; you see an article or post of interest on Facebook and want to share it immediately without copying and pasting a link into another service; one of the parties doesn't have access to Facetime, zoom, etc., and FB Messenger's video chat option is easy (we actually use it with my non-tech savvy parents). I'm available for 2 hours per day to take your kids to the park to play and get exercise while you work. Pricing by week or by day." Also list any sports, arts, instruments, special interests she has, etc. if you want to make it more specialized. As a parent, I would be more likely to respond to something very specific like this than an open-ended offer to babysit. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Dd age 11 told me she is bisexual. I trust her instincts and am personally fine but am concerned about how her middle school peer group will react. She has already told a few people. I am hoping for help with resources (books, online, safe forums, etc) for dd to learn more and connect with others in a safe place. Her school isn’t large enough to have a lot of others who will understand - plus she is realizing this quite young - so I am asking her to not yet label herself with schoolmates. But she will need some places to find her group. Thanks so much. 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Where do you live? I feel like this would be a non-issue in my kids' peer groups in NYC. DC is 11 and while I haven't heard of any kid come out yet at that age, my kids (and most in our social circle) have been surrounded by out queer teachers, family, friends, classmates' parents, leaders, clergy, etc. and have been exposed to inclusive messaging from a young age. Not to mention what we see in the media (and on social media), for those who might not be in a "tolerant" (hate that word) environment - there is so much more positive representation than when we were kids. Well 11 is not to young to have feelings about sexuality, I would probably sit my child down and explain that sexuality is fluid. No one is 100% straight and no one is 100% gay. Further experience and experimentation will be needed and it's okay if your 11 year old thoughts don't match your 24 year old thoughts. Well, the entire process is going to be overhauled now. They don't have grades or test scores from this year to use for screened admissions, so it looks like things will go to a lottery. But the high school process was a total nightmare - we went on about 20 tours, mostly during the school/work day, with many schools having their own requirements (essays, interviews). We could have moved to a nice suburb, walked into the highly-regarded school down the block, and just registered. (And that school would have things like an orchestra and band, and a nice library, which my dc's high school does not have). [ Reply | More ]

Depends on the kid, whether she's medicated, any co-morbid issues and age. Most kids with ADHD aren't disruptive, especially if medicated. The biggest disruption might be talking out of turn, talking too much, asking irrelevant questions. If they are smart, they can still get good grades, but may need a 504 or IEP to get around the rough edges. [ Reply | More ]

Usually both (unless medicated and he/she responds well to meds which is not always the case). A super genius with not very well controlled adhd might have great grades in a demanding school, but that is probably not the norm. DS fits the PP's last point. Fabulous memory and did fine for years, but hit a wall in middle school as more organization expected to succeed. I am struck by how many teachers fail to recognize these traits and blame the student. DS couldn't figure out what to do and lacked confidence to ask (very quiet). Teacher assumed he was just a horrible, irresponsible kid. Sad because I liked the teacher. DS tested one year later and now takes meds - help a lot but not fool proof. Sometimes I wonder if I should go back to the teacher and suggest that she ask the student/parents about what is going on rather than being punitive. This is an independent school, so the teacher has reasonable class loads to manage. [ Reply | More ]

Yes and Yes. It all depends on the kid and the school. They need good support with people who know about ADD and what strategies support the ADD brain while it is growing. The biggest risk at a demanding school is that the teachers won't have the training or background to support and the kid will feel like shit because they are treated like there is something wrong with them. In the upper grades especially, teachers in privates are hired more for their content knowledge than their pedagogy. Being in touch with support services (the dep't that actually has the training and experience) early and often is key so that they can interface with the teachers. [ Reply | More ]

Another factor is that many teachers are explicitly instructed not to make recommendations or observations that indicate they think a child has a certain condition. They can describe what they see, but recommending evaluation is a huge no-no. [ Reply | More ]

Please don't assume ADHD equals a disruptive child. I have become guarded about who I tell about my child's ADHD because too many parents and teachers assume this. Even before he was medicated, he was never out of control. This is why he wasn't diagnosed earlier. Can he keep track of his assignments on his own or advocate for himself well, no? Is he the target of bullies - yes! [ Reply | More ]

a properly medicated ADHD kid with a high IQ can do very well in school AND won't be disruptive. It's odd to me how you separate out the two issues -- if the child is having behavior issues, the child isn't properly medicated. [ Reply | More ]

So you're aware how much damage you do by every instance of snapping at him? Yet you can't get yourself to stop the behavior. I think you'd have to talk to a real counselor for advice, but my immediate thought is that you're getting something from it. Perhaps you get some sort of release by flagging shit that he's not doing or doing incorrectly. Maybe you have no concept of just how much strife and resentment you're generating by doing this incessantly. I really hope you can find something that works - website, books, talking to someone. If you were my partner, I'd be becoming increasingly resentful every day. You guys are a team. Can you get a whiteboard and divide the tasks and agree that you'll each accomplish your side of the board with no conversation about it each day? Create some system where you don't feel like you need to mother him into doing his fair share. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

So, every time you are about to lash out at him, remind yourself that he forgives you without saying a word, so you should forgive him. Take it step by step. Try softening what you say first. Notice how good it makes you feel that you were kind to the person you love. Once you have done that for while, try not saying anything. "Is taking out the trash really that important? What if I let it sit for one more day? What if I let it sit for one more day and then ask him nicely to take it out? Will the world end? No." [ Reply | More ]

If he feels so "responsible" it's because he's inflexible and critical. I don't know if I can stay with him in the long run but I can't deal with that on top of everything else right now. [ - ] We are relocating from London to NYC for work reasons. We won't all be moving until January 2021. My children (boys) will be aged 10 and 7 when we move and I am trying to work out where to live, and what schools to consider. They are in a very academic London prep right now - the youngest thrives, but the eldest finds it a challenge. That said the curriculum is known to be "ahead" of the public school system. Our main requirements are a walkable commute to mid-town and to be near green spaces. I wondered if anyone has any insight into schools on the Upper West side? I think this is likely to be a good location for us. Alternatively, we would consider Battery Park City (and subway to work) but don't know a lot about schools in that area, only the UN international school, British school and the Blue School. Anyone have any insight? Thank you! 25 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You will need to go public for the spring but can apply for private for the 2021-22 year this fall. The best school zones in the upper west side are PS87, PS199 and PS 9 you can find more information at inside schools https://insideschools.org/school/03M087. For private, the most demanding are Collegiate (all boys on the UWS), Trinity(UWS), Dalton (UES) and Horrace Mann (Riverdale, kids will need to bus but has big fields and amazing campus) -- these schools tend to have few openings if it's not an entry year. Other private on the UWS are Columbia Grammar and Prep, Ethical Culture Fieldston School, Dwight and Calhoun. Hope this helps! [ Reply | More ]

Do you want your boys in co-Ed or an all boys school? Do you want a K-8 or K-12? St Bernard’s (K-8/ all boys) is modeled after a British school. It is very rigorous - and they may have spots open. You should contact the admissions office. It is right across the street from the park. If you lived in that area you could walk your boys to school be near Central Park. It is not walkable to mid town. [ Reply | More ]

Coming from an academically rigorous school in London, I think you might be disappointed by UNIS and the British school. Go for top private schools, which are all uptown. They are Trinity and Collegiate, followed by Dalton and Horace Mann, which is all the way in Bronx. [ Reply | More ]

Agree with this. I would live uptown. Near Central Park. On either the upper east side or upper west side. If your boys are in an all boys school now...you may want to consider all the boys schools - at Bernard’s, Buckley, st David’s, allen Stevenson and browning (all East side ) or collegiate (west side). I agree with this, but would add Fieldston and Riverdale to the list. [ Reply | More ]

they have different tiers, I think it's fine, really nice community too. If you must stay with Brits try the British International School. [ Reply | More ]

Definitely join Parents League (https://www.parentsleague.org/ ) - for under $300 you get unlimited advising appointments. There are lots of schools to choose from - you can get a list of independent schools from the Parents League website (https://www.parentsleague.org/schools/members). Also, for a mid-year transfer, perhaps Wetherby-Pembridge, on the UWS, would be less of a transition from the current school? (https://www.wetherby-pembridge.org/) [ Reply | More ]

It is the NYC branch of the London school Prince William and Prince Harry attended for nursery and primary school. But, then again, what fun would it be to quickly Google it when you could write a snarky comment in blissful ignorance and hide behind the anonymity of this board?! [ Reply | More ]

How long do you plan on staying in NYC? If it’s short term, I would look into city schools — Collegiate, St Bernards, Dalton, Trinity but also apply to Horace Mann, Riverdale, Fieldston. UWS has two great parks —Central Park and Riverside Park. [ Reply | More ]

We are at a k-8 boys school and most families who have come from London are quite happy but I do remember one family that was not at all content and felt like the culture shock was too much. This is just to say that all these schools have experience welcoming people from various types of London schools so they will be able to guide you as well. [ Reply | More ]

Also- you do not want to live in Battery Park City and send kids to UNIS or British school- crosstown drop offs are annoying. Think of keeping your commuting corridor on an uptown/downtown axis. The exception to this would be living across Central Park from your school- walking through the park everyday would be lovely. [ Reply | More ]

My SIL and her family moved to London from NYC. Her DS was at St B and had an easy transiton to a prep school that is considered rigorous. [ Reply | More ]

I buy the ash-tone dyes, even though my hair was never ash-tone. I was a brunette with red highlights (but now have a lot of gray). If I buy dye that is actually that color it gets very brassy. [ Reply | More ]

Neutral or cool tones (should be in the color name and or number - w=warm, n=neutral); also look for dye that has a purple base (some have purple, some have green) - I think L'Oreal used to have a purple base, you can sort of tell by looking at the ingredients on the box (or call their customer service). The purple doesn't help brassy but helps cool tones not look too ashy. [ Reply | More ]
