10 years ago, we looked at selling in Brooklyn and buying in Hastings. It was a close call. We ended up trading up in Brooklyn. We're richer for it, but if someone told me just how many hours I'd spend on school admission stuff (x 2 kids), I'm not sure it was worth it [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

np. The effect of this health crisis is still not reflected in the prices. The suburb prices will move up and the city will fall. No one has sold anything here yet, but I see a bunch of new listings and more will come. [ Reply | More ]

I know, I also lost years of my life to the public school admissions process. I'm an urban person and always wanted to raise cosmopolitan kids in a diverse, culturally-rich environment. But in hindsight, I can't say it has been worth it. They probably would have been happier with a back yard and a dog. [ Reply | More ]

+1 In Brooklyn with a 7th and 8th grader. Not worth it, though I'm not sure where we should have gone. Somewhere else, much earlier. [ Reply | More ]

np. But where? We can still move and I can't decide what is a good place to replace Brooklyn, besides Montclair. [ Reply | More ]

Dc still less than 12 months here. What kind of time did you spend and what did it involve you doing? This sounds like a cautionary tale I should hear [ Reply | More ]

Well, the entire process is going to be overhauled now. They don't have grades or test scores from this year to use for screened admissions, so it looks like things will go to a lottery. But the high school process was a total nightmare - we went on about 20 tours, mostly during the school/work day, with many schools having their own requirements (essays, interviews). We could have moved to a nice suburb, walked into the highly-regarded school down the block, and just registered. (And that school would have things like an orchestra and band, and a nice library, which my dc's high school does not have). [ Reply | More ]

NP: Just to clarify the above, it's not that we don't have grades this year. It is that DOE decided to get ride of grades, despite having regular learning for 3/4 of the year. This decision was clearly made with intent to impact admissions. [ Reply | More ]

I put off a job search due to the double whammy of middle school and high school admissions navigation - I'm angry about that - as who the hell knows if I'll get a job now due to pandemic! [ Reply | More ]
