Looked at my 4th grader’s group chats and so much of the conversation is telling each other to shut the f up and calling each other b****. Vicious stuff. I am pretty horrified. Is this normal?? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

OP: These are nerdy fourth graders talking like ex-cons. It’s really gross. [ Reply | More ]

+1. My kid is such a sheltered nerd (which I love), I'm actually afraid for him to start MS next year. [ Reply | More ]

Woah, in 4th? Boys or girls? Not that that matters. My third graders chats are all just dumb memes and boys repeating 80x 'can you play minecraft now?' [ Reply | More ]

I would characterize this as not okay and requiring your intervention but I hesitate to say "not normal" because all it takes is one kid to start this and then the others follow suit. I.e. I don't think it's indicative that your dc is abnormal, just that the dynamic needs to be broken up. I'd make him/her stop the chats for a while. (FWIW if this were 9th grade, I'd say focus on your own kid's behavior but don't start a whole thing about it being unacceptable to have friends who curse.) [ Reply | More ]

this. they are all new to this chat stuff and this cohort is getting into it much earlier due to remote schooling. I have a 4th grader too. They have veered wildly from just sending each other emojis to fighting in all caps and exclamation points. [ Reply | More ]

Email the other parents and possibly the teacher, esp if these chats are in a school hosted forum. We saw something like that starting to happen in our grade's group chats and shut it down quick. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thanks, guys. Yes, I'm on it. Contacting all parents to try to shut this down and change how the kids are treating one another. It's NUTS [ Reply | More ]
