I buy the ash-tone dyes, even though my hair was never ash-tone. I was a brunette with red highlights (but now have a lot of gray). If I buy dye that is actually that color it gets very brassy. [ Reply | More ]

Neutral or cool tones (should be in the color name and or number - w=warm, n=neutral); also look for dye that has a purple base (some have purple, some have green) - I think L'Oreal used to have a purple base, you can sort of tell by looking at the ingredients on the box (or call their customer service). The purple doesn't help brassy but helps cool tones not look too ashy. [ Reply | More ]
