We've lived lots of places but have settled down to raise our family in a small town outside Burlington, VT. Our house is old and lovely (built in 1810), but I'm not sure I would want to maintain it in my retirement, especially with the kids gone. Maybe we'll get a condo in Burlington proper. We're thinking of Burlington, too! I want to be in a college town, blue state, near skiing/lake, a good hospital and airport. [ Reply | More ]

No idea to be honest. It seems presumptive to even think about it. [ Reply | More ]

I'd like to split time 50/50 somehow... how will you afford having 3 places, or will you do a short-term rental somewhere? [ Reply | More ]

I've had the places for awhile, lucky enough to be able to afford to maintain. FL timing is Nov-May, Manhattan in May/June and Sept/Oct, and Colorado during the heat of the summer. [ Reply | More ]

I'm with you but swap out the Berkshires with Colorado - I'm an East Coaster to the bone. I'm not sure if I'll keep my current apartment in Manhattan - will probably downsize that and get a nice lake house in Otis MA with property attached so DH and I can share an art studio. My whole extended elders are in South Florida so I'm assuming I'll get a condo next to them too - but a small one. God willing - one nice international trip a year. [ Reply | More ]

I'd love to stay in NYC if it's not too expensive. I want to be one of those old ladies on the UWS who goes to lectures and shows, maintains a community garden, and volunteers in her spare time. [ Reply | More ]

Totally this. My mom is in her mid-80s, and lives in the mid-80s, has been in her small apt. for 50+ years and will never leave, I'm planning something similar. [ Reply | More ]

NYC is a great place to be retired. You can take the bus anywhere and there are TONS of free readings, music, art. My aunt really enjoyed living in NYC in her later years. [ Reply | More ]

absolutely. you don't have to worry about driving (an issue for a lot of elderly), you stay active just by walking around and getting groceries, there's lots of events to go to to stay mentally active, and you naturally downsize by the size of your apt. [ Reply | More ]

Yep! My mom lives in a doorman building and they do everything for her, she can walk to doctors appointments, etc. Very civilized. [ Reply | More ]

the reason most dont stay is the cost of living. Nice areas of NYC are unaffordable to many. If you have an apt paid off, most just want to sell it and live off the profit. [ Reply | More ]

We will remain part time in nyc, part time in Eastern LI and part time in Europe. Both my parents and in-laws built vacation homes in Europe so we will be able to stay there for an extended time as we choose fit. [ Reply | More ]

I think we'll have a permanent residence in FL, and then rent houses elsewhere 4-6 months out of the year, for a year at a time. We also have EU citizenship, so that's another strong possibility. [ Reply | More ]
