hold on a second--am I to understand that MS and HS in NYC do not have tracking? That's crazy. Kids are at different levels and need to learn at different levels. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Some do - like Baruch and Wagner have an SP program that is screened for incoming 6th graders, but kids can move in/out of in 7th and 8th based on grades and performance. [ Reply | More ]

If they get rid of screened schools, won't this go away too? [ Reply | More ]

It would definitely at the point of entry... not sure if they will still keep the programs and have kids move around into them once admitted. [ Reply | More ]

There is no trackigg by in elementary school either. But in highschool some take AP classes and others don’t so that separates some kids [ Reply | More ]

This is why G&T is coveted. Most of us don't think our kids are geniuses who need to be working 2 grades ahead... district G&T programs especially are simply more like the top track of a school that has tracking system. Would totally have stayed in our local Gen Ed if we could have that kind of option. [ Reply | More ]

what do you mean by tracking in elementary school? When I was a kid, we had different reading groups and my kid still has that. Sometimes different math groups too. They definitely downplay it but they do. I only realized that given remote schooling and me seeing more of what they do in school. [ Reply | More ]

I also had no idea. Apparently, in other parts of the country, they follow the Renzuli model - pulling kids up when they need it, but on a temporary basis (perhaps limited by time or by lesson) - so I am told by educators in other states. I grew up in another state and we still had tracking through the early 2000s! [ Reply | More ]

That method seems great as well - just SOMETHING to give the lower performing kids extra help, and the accelerated kids more enrichment. The current method teaches to the middle. [ Reply | More ]

My son's screened hs in nyc has 3 math tracks. Wonder how it will work to just get rid of that--especially if kids are at all different levels in math coming in. [ Reply | More ]

Depends on the school. RKA (combined MS/HS in Riverdale) has tracking. [ Reply | More ]

tracking sucks - most times it's used solely to separate out children of color. huge problem at an elementary school in my area. just flat out segregation and the administration is 100% racist. [ Reply | More ]

Some schools do a modified version. One MS I toured had a period every day allocated for "Small group work" which is working in math or ELA with kids at your level, be it advanced or needed extra help. Another school calls it "Advancement". [ Reply | More ]

No, it was eliminated because it was regarded as racist. [ Reply | More ]
