I’ve been doing IF since late March along with not drinking and exercising daily. The first month or so I was steadily losing 2 lbs a week. Then it slowed to 1 lb a week and has kind of plateaued the last couple weeks. Granted I have not been calorie restricting or limiting carbs. I would still like to lose like 5 more lbs but I know I will probably have to get a little more strict with the food intake. [ Reply | More ]

I was a day student at Williston Northampton in the 1990’s and it is a great school with lots to do in the area w/ cafes, bookstores and restaurants. Good to know! We don't fit the preppy mold at all, but live in a small NE town and want dd to be exposed to new people/places/ideas during high school. DH and I both went to nyc public schools and greatly value that experience. We obviously can't replicate it here and we're pretty torn as to whether boarding school will be eye-opening or just a bubble of priviledge. Our local public HS is good, though small (same ~65 kids in her grade since K), and though money is not an object for us, we really try to raise our dcs humbly. [ Reply | More ]

DS is graduating from a BS not on this list. It has been great for him. DD going to another one not on the list in the fall. I agree about the day student population comment. IOE even if the day pop is low, a lot of kids lived nearby, so it could be different on some weekends. Especially long weekends when it was a bit far for him to get home after sports. That being said I know kids who have gone to all of those schools and loved them. You do need to see them to get the real vibe. All of them have artsy, sporty, shy and outgoing kids, it is how they meld that gives the school it's character. For cold hard numbers, look at boardingschoolreview.com just to compare size, sports etc. [ Reply | More ]

Zoom with preschool class once, sometimes twice, daily for 20-30 min. We go to the neighborhood park almost daily where she often plays with 1-2 other kids. Scoot, run around or kick a ball mostly. They do pretty well with masks. We had/have the option to visit ILs in flyover for more space. But other than two old people, no extra social opportunities. The thought of young kids interacting only with their nuclear family for much longer seems just wrong to me. 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You are doing so much more than we have, or that most people I know in the city have. My kids are a little older (elementary) but haven't seen any kids or family at all. Just daily walks to the park. Agree that it's not "normal" but it's where we are. Hoping we have some day camp options by mid June or August at least. I know for preschool that probably isn't an option for you, but if camps are opening maybe people will start feeling more comfortable about doing small group playground meetups this summer. I think your kid will get a lot more out of socializing outside with kids she knows than with random kids who happen to be in the playground at the same time, so you might try texting your neighborhood friends to see if they will meet outside. I think that dorms can work like "super spreader" spaces. If one student gets covid, contamination of others will be almost immediate and on a large scale. And then, what do you do? Isolating is not easy if you don't have extra rooms, and contact tracing also not reliable given the mind frame of 18-year olds. And with faculty and staff coming in and out of campus everyday for work, a whole larger community could be at risk. [ Reply | More ]

One solution would be to operate at half capacity - only allow parts of the student body to move in so that the situation is more manageable, everybody in singles, etc. But on what basis will you decide who gets to come and who has to stay? Ok, but defer and then what? What would your kid do for that year? My DC is starting at a SLAC in the fall, they have announced their plan to be open with the ability to pivot, class schedules have been revised so they can quickly go online if needed. If they do, that would not be great, but DC sitting at home playing Assassin's Creed for months isn't better, he made zoom work for HS and he can do it for college if he has to. [ Reply | More ]

np: The political campaign thing is what dd and a lot of her classmates plan to do if their school does not open. They will just take the fall term off (not freshmen) and try to make some difference in the world. I think it is way better than more zoom in the bedroom, which has not been great and they definitely do not want to repeat. [ Reply | More ]

It really depends on your comfort level and where you are. I took my teens, or rather my teens took me as they were insistent on going, to a peaceful protest of about 300o people in my small Long Island town. Everyone there wore masks and we stayed in the back or on the sides 6-10feet away from others. I'm glad we went. [ Reply | More ]

Depends where and when, I've seen a couple of marches and both were peaceful and I didn't feel threatened being in the close vicinity. However, things can always get heated and being around a crowd of super-charged people is never 100% safe, you need to plan for exit and it may not be easy as it's not a parade, there is police all around. Just don't think it's a parade, that's all. And honestly this can't go on forever, at some point people will stop marching, it does hurt the economy which is already f-ed. [ Reply | More ]

I went to the rally by Gracie Mansion last night. Very safe, very well organized. Not totally socially distant, but much looser than, say at the last Women's March and masks were worn by most. A group of marchers arrived ~7:30 and it got more congested at that point - then the groups combined and marched downtown from there. I split off about 8:15/8:30 [ Reply | More ]

HM - I firmly believe in peaceful protest. But I would think long and hard about going into a crowd of people right now. Disease risk aside, it only takes a couple of bad actors to result in tragedy. [ Reply | More ]

Just curious, HM - do the "bad actors" showing up at these protests have historical precedent in a setting like this? [ Reply | More ]
