From what I can ascertain, the founder posted something about feeling so removed from “it all” (I’m guessing from context he meant the protests/riots), and that life could not feel more “normal, peaceful, and ideal” in his neighborhood. Someone said part of being an ally is to use your privilege to speak up against rhetoric. He said the media is hyping things. And then all hell broke loose. [ Reply | More ]

I know a lot of celebrities and while they may have celebrity 'friends" their true besties are almost always their staff, producing partners/business partners, non-famous childhood friends, family. They literally cannot handle the competition with other celebrities and these friendships are shallow and for the press. They also cannot confide in other celebrities. Everyone is a back stabber. everyone who "fled" NYC is at their country house, or doing an air bnb for the spring/summer. A ton of young NYkers who rent are just not renewing leases, and many moved back home temporarily with family. Job status is tenuous for a lot of people, so no one is making huge moves unless it was already in the works. NYC was getting to be impossible to afford for young families. Good public school zones are so exp, you may as well move to the burbs and get a decent house if you cant afford private. But NYC only closed down 3 months ago, so it will take time [ Reply | More ]

Make sure you clarify materials used and what is included. One guy I’ve worked with sometimes “forgets” stuff, like replacing the doors on closets and suddenly that adds a cost, and the tile was only budgeted for x and I like the one 2x. Putting a deck up now. Originally he was four thousand less than other estimate. When I really probed and nailed everything down, it was a seven hundred dollar difference. [ Reply | More ]

I am the one who responded about IKEA kitchen on your other post. What is the breakdown of the cost for your quote? Honestly, 35-50 K seems OK, even on the low side. Our breakdown was: 15K IKEA cabinets, 15K contractor cost, 7K countertop (Cambria quartz), 10K or so appliances, 2-3K floors [ Reply | More ]

These are the top cabinets https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/voxtorp-drawer-front-high-gloss-light-beige-10321294/ These are my bottom cabinets https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/voxtorp-drawer-front-walnut-effect-50328142/ We did our kitchen in August of 2018, and so far the cabinets have held up great. Easy maintenance and high quality. yes we were quoted 35K for custom made cabinets, and I did not like the styles at 3 places I worked with. I am in the Midwest, but my friends did their kitchen in Bergen county NJ, with same cabinets but Miele/Bosch appliances and quartzite counter tops also under 55 K. Their kitchen is much smaller though. [ Reply | More ]

This is very accurate according to my calculations too. I think a good kitchen renovation - plan to have around $55 - $70K. I feel like if you are going through the trouble, you'll end up wanting it to be your specs, and those extra this and that will matter. I'd budget around $65K. [ Reply | More ]

I’ve had something similar for years, had all kinds of tests and still no clue. I used to get it infrequently, now sometimes many episodes in one day. I believe in my case it’s a combination of anxiety (although it’s nothing like a panic attack) and some kind of adrenal misfiring. I have yet to find a doc with a clue as to what it is. Anxiety meds don’t help either. Hope you find an answer! [ Reply | More ]

I'm into craft beer, and a good stout has flavors of coffee, chocolate, others too, that impart flavor to your food. A typical AAL ("adjunct American lager") simply doesn't have these tastes. You'll fit in fine in any of those neighborhoods. San Marino is the most expensive and insular, in my opinion, and very good schools but lots of pressure. Pasadena is larger, very divers, not good public schools (I could recount a horror story about high school, not violent but inept). LaC is solidly UMC, good schools, but slightly farther away from downtown. Count on expensive housing in all of these communities. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, Beverly Hill and Santa Monica are separate cities. They are in LA county, but not in the city of LA. So, for example, they are separate school systems. [ Reply | More ]

There is a downtown LA ( DTLA) where places like city Hall, Disney Hall, Music Center, justice buildings, LA Live are. There must be almost 100 different neighborhoods in LA (Hollywood, Watts, Bel Air, etc.). There are about 80 cities within the country of LA, many of them considered are the suburbs. [ Reply | More ]

It’s all the city but to a New Yorker they all look like what we call suburbs. Except downtown. [ Reply | More ]

Downtown has offices, city admin and apartments but until recently it was pretty dead. The surrounding areas are considered neighborhoods or their own cities and I guess are more like suburbs in that they are mainly single family homes. Even the so called "bad' neighborhoods are a lot of single family homes as opposed to apartment buildings. But even while more akin to a suburb a lot of these places aren't really that suburban in feel, more like little cities within the city. I live in Manhattan Beach and it is very densely populated [ Reply | More ]

I once worked a conference at the convention center and stayed in the Westin Boneventure - that to me seemed like the center of the "city" of LA - there wasn't much to it. [ Reply | More ]

Big, polluted, traffic sprawl. Imagine if you considered Queens, Long Island, NJ and Staten Island all as part of NYC - during rush hour. That is LA. [ Reply | More ]

LA County is 88 cities. Los Angeles proper is large and sprawling so suburban landscapes are actually in the city itself. But there is a downtown and clear areas of LA itself. East vs. West is the biggest distinction, but South LA is also its own neighborhood. Silverlake, Atwater, Eagle Rock are East. Venice and Sawtelle are West. Santa Monica is its own city, like Beverly Hills, Compton, or Pasadena. Think of LA as a bowl rimmed with mountains and open on one side to the Pacific ocean. [ Reply | More ]
