"The idea of keeping schools closed in the fall because of safety concerns for children might be "a bit of a reach," said Dr. Anthony Fauci" and more on this in this article - https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/03/us/fauci-schools-reopening-coronavirus/index.html [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It's actually not crazy. As much as schools really want to re-open, the challenges may be too great and the costs too high. Many families would actually prefer remote. If school doesn't reopen in the fall, it is very unlikely to reopen in January when the flu season will be peaking. This post could very well be accurate... [ Reply | More ]

the entire point of this post was to directly quote fauci. not saying anything definitive, but bottom line - none of us have a hotter take than fauci. not you, not anyone on this board. this is where we are at right now. [ Reply | More ]

Fauci is showing he's open. He can't say no to school right now. He doesn't have the data. But the overwhelming likelihood is no school for the year. Unless a vaccine is tested and delivered by December -- and that is not gonna happen [ Reply | More ]

Many families actually won't prefer remote. Most families cannot "prefer" period. And many of those who have the privilege to "prefer", do not prefer remote for a variety of reasons. [ Reply | More ]

Right. I do have that privilege, and no way would I prefer remote in the fall. I prefer anything but, as you said, its not up to me anyway. [ Reply | More ]

False. No family prefers remote, unless it's a family with teachers. [ Reply | More ]

OR: Your head is in the sand, dear. There is no vaccine. There is no herd immunity. Children are spreaders. They carry and spread the same viral load of COVID as adults, per data out today. There's no school until there's a vaccine or herd immunity in NYC. Wake up [ Reply | More ]

Can you post that data? Everything I've read so far says that children do not spread at the same rate as adults. [ Reply | More ]

How can school NOT be open? How will people go to work? What world do you all live in? Just because people test positive for covid doesn't mean they are deathly ill. or that they will spread deathly illness. Schools have to open or at least be hybrid with remote. [ Reply | More ]

Really you don't get this yet? It's about the health care workers and the hospital beds. You can't overwhelm either. And then parents don't want their kids to get sick, even if asymptomatically, and transfer it to adults. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I don’t think you get this. The idea of us staying home was to flatten the curve, not to eliminate the virus. [ Reply | More ]

this is the thing. if they expect parents to return to work in person, schools have to reopen. that's non-negotiable. [ Reply | More ]

Please try to be a bit accurate: "some" schools in Korea were forced to close again. Your statement implies that all were. [ Reply | More ]

More than 500 schools closed again. They did staggered opening and this after testing thousands and having 49 new Covid cases. There’s just no comparison to how things are here. I just don’t see schools opening here in the fall unless we really flatten the curve. We have over 100k deaths here vs 273. For reference, south Korea has population of 51M vs 8M in NYC [ Reply | More ]

It's less about safety concerns for children (who statistically are much less likely to have severe Covid) and more about safety concerns for teachers/staff, and also children's family members (because kids can be asymptomatic spreaders). [ Reply | More ]

I think both. Kids have the same viral load as adults and with new Kawasaki-like symptoms appearing in some kids, it’s too risky [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.04.20, 03:31 PM Flag

i dont think its risky or statistically significant. there were estimated that 50-80% of nyc had been exposed or had covid. there are like 2 million kids in nyc, so lets say 1 million kids were exposed or had it. of those 150? ended up with kwasaki type symptoms. thats what 150 kids out of 1 million? thats a tiny tiny tiny percentage. and kawasaki type symptoms can occur after any virus (like strep). [ Reply | More ]

I don’t think a million kids were exposed. Schools were closed and most were home. Shouldn’t it be based on the number of kids tested or those that tested positive or were ill from Feb to now? [ Reply | More ]
