[ - ] We finally pulled the trigger and are heading to flyover for the summer. DH hasn’t met one of my cousins that lives there. She’s had some mental health struggles and is somewhat of a black sheep of the family and I’m trying to figure out how to handle her. I feel bad because her sister and dad conspired FP get custody of her teenage son last year. He seems to be thriving but they did it in a very unkind way (basically exploited her mental health struggles hired a pitbull lawyer and bribed the kid to say he wanted to live with them, the judge ultimately let the kid decide). Overall the kid is thriving with her sister but him dreading the drama a bit because I know she’s heartbroken. 36 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

It’s a small town so I can’t really avoid her and we’ve always had a good relationship but we didn’t see her last time we were there. We did see her mom and she basically was extremely upset (her mom had custody and was working towards reunification). I honestly know I don’t have the full story from any side and I’ve been trying to stay out of it. [ Reply | More ]

WHY THE F*CK do people on UB insist on using the insulting word "flyover"? It's a classist word meaning that the people and places between the East Coast and West Coast are only good to fly over, not to mingle with. Can't you just say Mid-America or something? Quit insulting those of us who don't live on the coasts! [ Reply | More ]

OP: I didn’t mean it as an insult. I just didn’t want to get into particulars and found it the best way to describe somewhere that isn’t on the coasts. It’s like a lot of people don’t think about the words they use in regard to race. When people say “flyover” it’s almost always short hand for “lazy, fat, and uneducated” without understanding if that were true, nothing would get done in this country. [ Reply | More ]

My aunt is already super upset that other family members exclude her. They basically came to town over the holidays and forced my aunt to cancel her party she had planned at her house with her daughter and friends so they could take her out to brunch and then didn’t understand why she wasn’t appreciative. *eye roll* honestly though I just need to keep reminding myself if family drama is the worst of my worries this summer I’ll be incredibly lucky. She talks to him regularly but was on probation (DUI) so she couldn’t visit him. He’s far away (state on opposite side of the country). N (her sis that has custody) has a very family-oriented set up, with two kids slightly younger than my cousin’s son (well call him J). J is a good kid but wasn’t doing well in school and my cousin had rotating bfs and didn’t have the stability of a job (was a student and working part time and also getting benefits). Ultimately, I think J is better-off with N because he needed structure that my aunt and cousin couldn’t provide. Of course, I can’t say any of this to my cousin or aunt. [ Reply | More ]

Most families have someone in it that has mental health issues or substance abuse issues or both. Why would your dh be so fragile that he can not see a woman with mental health issues? I would be civil and nice to all during my visit but stay uninvolved because you do not really know the situation. If this kid chose not to live with his mom, there is a reason for that that has nothing to do with bribes. [ Reply | More ]

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that your DH is not the problem. It is you. You do clearly have an opinion and are very sympathetic to your aunt but borderlines are easier to deal with when you are farther away and it sounds like in the end, the child is better off. You need to stay the hell out of this shit show. Tell your aunt and cousin that you are happy to listen if they need to vent but then move the subject on and say you aren't going to take side. You are fresh meat to this woman and she will using you to further her needs. Susie says she can't believe youdidnt invite me. Susie says you are wrong. TELL HER YOU ARE NOT THERE TO REUNIFY THE FAMILY. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thanks for this. We texted a bit and as soon as I said there was probably nothing I can do to help her she launched into “it’s all my fault I’m so terrible” and that triggered me because my mom is very similar. I need to just stick to my guns that our relationship is independent of the rest of the family and we are very stressed out from everything that we’ve been dealing with for the past few months and need to keep conversation light and enjoyable. My DH isn’t fragile at all, he’s just a litigator and can smell bs and manipulation a mile away. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Looking for advice: 12 yo daughter gets upset whenever I try to help or instruct her on hygiene issues. She is clean, but her hair is too long, greasy at roots , dry and frizzy at the ends, she has acne, which we are treating with derm, but she gets so upset when I remind her to apply cream or ask if she wants me to do a facial. I am worried about her self esteem. Right now we aren’t interacting with anyone, so I’ve let it slide, but I worry that she might be bullied once she is back around kids. 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Some of your criticisms are more appearance-based than hygiene-based. Dry hair? Frizzy hair? Hair too long? That's not hygiene. So basically she hears you harping about her appearance (that it's not up to par for you) and that's going to be more of a hit to her self-esteem than teasing from kids. I think you are overly worried about bullying from kids; these issues are not unusual for kids. [ Reply | More ]

I agree. I mentioned my 13 year old above and I try to get her to shower and brush her teeth. Beyond that, I live her alone. She does not have self esteem issues. In fact, mil said to her that she is getting older and should start spending more time on her looks and she said "you are sexist because you never say that to my brother." She has plenty of confidence. I think the kids worried about looks can be a confidence issue. [ Reply | More ]

For a year I have been seriously trying, the the pandemic happened and even the few opportunities I was getting for interviews, disappeared or paused indefinitely. But will it still be the NYC I have lived in for 22 years? Will it go back to being the great (although crazy expensive - this I dont miss) melting pot and cradle of culture and the arts? I have a few friends in the city who tell me how bad it's getting, now with the looting, etc. It truly makes me sad and I still hope I will be able to come back, I hope things improve. NYC has periods of unsafety and grossness. This is the phase it will go through for the next decade before it can rebuild again. It was getting too expensive for its own good. Corona ran people out and now the looting is the icing. People are leaving with their young children. companies are renting offices elsewhere. There are businesses that will not have made it thru all of this. It will come back, but it's a cycle. [ Reply | More ]

You have posted a few times before, right? I think you're romanticizing NY way too much at this point. Move back or don't move back. The city is not going to fall to ruins. If you want to be here, great. But it almost sounds like you're putting it up on this huge pedestal that is completely set up to fail you once you're back. Why don't you come out here and visit one of those friends and see for yourself. We're not in a great place this week, but my hope is that these protests don't go on until Jan 20. It's a great city, but it's not the only city you can be happy in. Come back or don't come back. [ Reply | More ]

Teacher here: it is safer to stay home, but not easier. FYI, the demands the union is making (eg. staggered schedule) would result in teachers being at school full time, just with students more spread out (and other measures like better testing, cleaning, etc). Covid is dangerous, but the danger is very heavily skewed toward the elderly. If you're under 50, Covid is less deadly than seasonal flu. And we don't close the schools every flu season. [ Reply | More ]

75% of the deaths are the elderly, which means 25% are not. However, we are learning that for even those who recover, the damage to the body is huge. [ Reply | More ]

No. The teachers' unions want to reopen with safety measures. Many public schools don't even have funding for soap in the restrooms: the unions want sanitation supplies, cleaning protocols, and staggered schedules to allow for distancing. What is unreasonable about that? [ Reply | More ]

I dont see how staggered schedules would work in reality here. Does it mean teachers have to work longer hours? Or some kids are home from school some days - who provides childcare on those days? Teachers cant be expected to be teaching in person and online at the same time. Seems like this would make things infinitely harder on teachers tbh. The City is conceding that they will not be able to do social distancing on the subway, and are just encouraging people to wear masks. I have a feeling that's what is going to happen with schools too. Increased sanitation, cleaning, handwashing, and PPE - def not unreasonable [ Reply | More ]

Maybe. The problem is that cleaning, sanitation, and handwashing facilities are limited to nonexistent in many schools, especially those that don't have a wealthy parent body to fundraise and the DOE is reluctant to commit to the cost of providing the extra measures for the indefinite period that the virus is a threat. That is where everyone's anger should be directed, not at the teachers' unions who are insisting on them. [ Reply | More ]

Yes. DOE wants any cleaning/sanitation measures to come from schools' existing budgets, meaning every dollar spent on custodian hours, hand sanitiser, etc, is one less dollar available to fund the actual education provided, at a time when schools are already incredibly under-resourced. I think teachers CAN teach in person and online at the same time and it's exactly what they should do. Just do live streaming. And I think teacher should work longer hours. Anyone I know who's WFH now is working longer hours and many for a reduced pay. [ Reply | More ]

I am a teacher. I know it's not the prevailing myth (and I want to be clear here that I am saying this in response to your statement that we need to work longer hours, not spontaneously whining) but I already work long hours outside of instructional time, grading and planning for my MS ELA classes. I am at school from 7 to 5, and I work for 2-3 more hours at night after my own children are asleep. I do a full day of work on the weekend while DH takes the kids out. If instructional hours are extended further by staggering, parents will have to accept that some of their children's work won't be graded and that lessons will be less interesting/dynamic, because there are just no more hours available for me to work. [ - ] Any MD mom please, or anyone who would know? So strange, first time this happens to me... about an hour ago a small vein on my right lower arm started to hurt intermittently (as if someone pokes it w a needle) I am in great health, never had vein issues and don't understand where this is coming from. Did not want to look on Google (I worry) but I did and talks about phlebitis... hope that is not the case. Will it go away on its own? I have pretty slim arms and could always see my veins.Does not look different, just slightly more raised than the one on the other arm... thanks for any feedback. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Well they had to that because they refused to shut down flights on time, have tests and facilities ready, institute mandatory quarantine for hot-spot arrivals. I can go on but you get the picture. Also, this shut down did not hurt as bad in European countries, because they have much stronger safety net. the mistake is allowing our society to be where we are - atrocious health care, poverty, money grab for corporations.
