I am sad because for the past 5 years, after having to leave NYC for work reasons, I have wanted to come back. For a year I have been seriously trying, the the pandemic happened and even the few opportunities I was getting for interviews, disappeared or paused indefinitely. But will it still be the NYC I have lived in for 22 years? Will it go back to being the great (although crazy expensive - this I dont miss) melting pot and cradle of culture and the arts? I have a few friends in the city who tell me how bad it's getting, now with the looting, etc. It truly makes me sad and I still hope I will be able to come back, I hope things improve. It is still the greatest city in the world. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I mean - the looting is a week old issue. coronavirus is a couple months old issue. it being insanely expensive is a decades old issue. which do you want help with? [ Reply | More ]

NYC has periods of unsafety and grossness. This is the phase it will go through for the next decade before it can rebuild again. It was getting too expensive for its own good. Corona ran people out and now the looting is the icing. People are leaving with their young children. companies are renting offices elsewhere. There are businesses that will not have made it thru all of this. It will come back, but it's a cycle. [ Reply | More ]

I'm in Park Slope and only know one family that is actually moving--everyone else is staying put or going away for a few weeks in the summer. [ Reply | More ]

You have posted a few times before, right? I think you're romanticizing NY way too much at this point. Move back or don't move back. The city is not going to fall to ruins. If you want to be here, great. But it almost sounds like you're putting it up on this huge pedestal that is completely set up to fail you once you're back. Why don't you come out here and visit one of those friends and see for yourself. We're not in a great place this week, but my hope is that these protests don't go on until Jan 20. It's a great city, but it's not the only city you can be happy in. Come back or don't come back. [ Reply | More ]

I agree. She has a lot of issues and thinks NYC will solve them. A city will not solve your problems. [ Reply | More ]

I am you except that I took a job, my husband gave notice at his workplace, we signed a contract with a school and now ... there is no office permanently (the job is still great) and no reason to come. My heart aches to be in NY but I don't know when that will happen as I know that to be fair to my family I need to be open to things falling into place where we are. [ Reply | More ]

op- just coming back this morning. Thank you for all your replies. I am not looking for a city to solve my problems. I have been thinking moving back to NYC for so long, simply because it is the only place I know well and where I have a few friends. And at my age it is not easy to relocate somewhere. That said, I agree that the city always goes through phases. Thank you. [ Reply | More ]
