anyone else think that the teachers unions have zero incentive to support opening schools in september? it’s easier and safer for them to stay home and they will get a salary anyway. i think this is going to be the biggest barrier to opening schools in september. and before you criticize i’m a doctor who assumes some degree of risk going to work everyday cause i know we have to start seeing patients again or we’ll go bankrupt. a friend's dh is a teacher in the uk and went to a meeting where teachers were up in arms about reopening (granted much earlier than here) and said he wanted to chime in and say 'look guys, we have to reopen the economy, we can't never go back into a classroom until this goes away' but felt intimidated by the noise to speak up. As a NYC DOE teacher, I find this incredibly offensive. I would love nothing more then to go back to my classroom and school. I also want to keep my 4 kids at home safe, as well as my elderly parents. Don’t think teachers are screaming to keep schools closed - we are not. We just want safety measures in place. I don’t think that is a lot to ask. [ Reply | More ]

I don't teach but curious--how many children do you work with? Are they good about handwashing, covering their faces? Do they pick their noses? And then do they touch everything? How many times have they sneezed in your face? Cried on you? Think harder about the differences between your job and the jobs many teachers have to do. [ Reply | More ]

Many employers have come out and said the issue is not the office but how you get people to the office - i.e. subways and trains. Again, that is on the govn't to solve, and to date they said they will not be doing anything besides nightly cleanings. The Point is that EVERYONE who goes back to work is at risk, not just teachers. Extra cleaning staff to clean surfaces; sanitation supplies (do you realise how many schools in NYC don't even have soap in the bathrooms?); staggered schedules so kids aren't all crowding the hallways at the same times and can sit more than a foot apart in classrooms. https://www.wsj.com/articles/new-york-city-teachers-push-for-specific-safety-measures-before-schools-reopen-11589731201 [ Reply | More ]

Teacher here: it is safer to stay home, but not easier. FYI, the demands the union is making (eg. staggered schedule) would result in teachers being at school full time, just with students more spread out (and other measures like better testing, cleaning, etc). None of this is ideal but I think the union's position is a good compromise. [ Reply | More ]

Are you going to an office of 30 people sitting packaged in a room, and several of them have some kind of minor illness causing sneezing, coughing...etc? [ Reply | More ]

how many people cram into a subway car during rush hour? far more than 30. There is literally no personal space. Maybe they will be wearing masks, maybe they wont. How is this different? [ Reply | More ]

Well yes, actually. Virus is most often spread by prolonged close contact. By the way, many teachers will be riding subway cars to schools, and THEN spending the entire day in close contact with 30 kids with no space to distance and no cleaning supplies. [ Reply | More ]

Do you not have to ride a crowded subway to get to work? If your child goes to school they will then be bringing home whatever they pick up to you as well. "Endangering" your life also. We either reopen, or we don't. If you have to go to work and your children dont have to go to school, how would that even work? You are ok to quit your job in that scenario? [ Reply | More ]

I don't think that this is an issue teachers should be asked to solve. The teachers I know work/sleep..that's it. And, yes, they have kids at home, too. Many of them teach in poor schools, where 70% of the parents don't speak English, so they are teaching subject matter AND they are helping kids navigate life. And, they do it without the respect, let alone the gratitude of the public. Contact your local system's head office and ask this question..don't put this issue teachers. [ Reply | More ]

I dont think I am asking the teachers to solve this issue. The govn't is asking people to get back to work without solving many issues - including how to safely get anyone to work (subway), and how to protect teachers or provide childcare if schools have to close. Teachers are not alone here [ Reply | More ]

That is silly. I think that those teachers with medical conditions should be given an option to stay home, but others must return. I need to take two different subway lines to get to work, so my environment is not rush free either. [ Reply | More ]

No, but I will be spending my day in an open space environment with a lot of people. Commuting to work takes about an hour each way, so I will have plenty of exposure to the virus. [ Reply | More ]

Covid is dangerous, but the danger is very heavily skewed toward the elderly. If you're under 50, Covid is less deadly than seasonal flu. And we don't close the schools every flu season. [ Reply | More ]

75% of the deaths are the elderly, which means 25% are not. However, we are learning that for even those who recover, the damage to the body is huge. [ Reply | More ]

No. The teachers' unions want to reopen with safety measures. Many public schools don't even have funding for soap in the restrooms: the unions want sanitation supplies, cleaning protocols, and staggered schedules to allow for distancing. What is unreasonable about that? [ Reply | More ]

I dont see how staggered schedules would work in reality here. Does it mean teachers have to work longer hours? Or some kids are home from school some days - who provides childcare on those days? Teachers cant be expected to be teaching in person and online at the same time. Seems like this would make things infinitely harder on teachers tbh. The City is conceding that they will not be able to do social distancing on the subway, and are just encouraging people to wear masks. I have a feeling that's what is going to happen with schools too. Increased sanitation, cleaning, handwashing, and PPE - def not unreasonable [ Reply | More ]

Maybe. The problem is that cleaning, sanitation, and handwashing facilities are limited to nonexistent in many schools, especially those that don't have a wealthy parent body to fundraise and the DOE is reluctant to commit to the cost of providing the extra measures for the indefinite period that the virus is a threat. That is where everyone's anger should be directed, not at the teachers' unions who are insisting on them. [ Reply | More ]

Yes. DOE wants any cleaning/sanitation measures to come from schools' existing budgets, meaning every dollar spent on custodian hours, hand sanitiser, etc, is one less dollar available to fund the actual education provided, at a time when schools are already incredibly under-resourced. I think teachers CAN teach in person and online at the same time and it's exactly what they should do. Just do live streaming. And I think teacher should work longer hours. Anyone I know who's WFH now is working longer hours and many for a reduced pay. [ Reply | More ]

I am a teacher. I know it's not the prevailing myth (and I want to be clear here that I am saying this in response to your statement that we need to work longer hours, not spontaneously whining) but I already work long hours outside of instructional time, grading and planning for my MS ELA classes. I am at school from 7 to 5, and I work for 2-3 more hours at night after my own children are asleep. I do a full day of work on the weekend while DH takes the kids out. If instructional hours are extended further by staggering, parents will have to accept that some of their children's work won't be graded and that lessons will be less interesting/dynamic, because there are just no more hours available for me to work. That's really a lot of hours. Thanks for the insights. Then I think live streaming so half of the class stays home at any given time is the way to go. [ Reply | More ]
