Harvard Law and other Harvard grad schools have just announced they will be remote in the Fall. Harvard College has not made a decision, but the writing is on the wall. This is likely to be followed by other Ivys, and so forth. Bad news for everyone hoping that schools will re-open in NYC. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

yes but colleges being remote is more like businesses being remote than schools. 18 year olds can learn. online - 7 year olds cannot. [ Reply | More ]

They also live on campus and congregate much more than 7yos. [ Reply | More ]

Grad students tend to live in apartments off campus everywhere, is that not the case at Harvard? [ Reply | More ]

Honestly I just don’t get it. Are they afraid the entire community will get deathly ill (literally) from covid? Serious question. Otherwise I just don’t get it. [ Reply | More ]

The professors are usually on the older side as well as the deans and they have a lot of international students as well so they probably prefer remote learning. They’re not dumb. They would rather be alive than risk dying. [ Reply | More ]

I think that dorms can work like "super spreader" spaces. If one student gets covid, contamination of others will be almost immediate and on a large scale. And then, what do you do? Isolating is not easy if you don't have extra rooms, and contact tracing also not reliable given the mind frame of 18-year olds. And with faculty and staff coming in and out of campus everyday for work, a whole larger community could be at risk. [ Reply | More ]

One solution would be to operate at half capacity - only allow parts of the student body to move in so that the situation is more manageable, everybody in singles, etc. But on what basis will you decide who gets to come and who has to stay? The whole social aspect of college may be compromised. I could totally see a sophomore "upset" because some of their best friends were not allowed to come back, etc... [ Reply | More ]

Stanford is doing this, two quarters on campus and one remote (summer will be a regular quarter with full class offerings). [ Reply | More ]

This! Plus, what about international students? Do they want to come and risk being sick away from their families? [ Reply | More ]

They can afford to do this, other schools that depend on tuition revenue cannot. [ Reply | More ]

This. Have you seen their endowment? Plus they’re Harvard. Who’s going to defer enrollment from there. [ Reply | More ]

My school has very little endowment and we're bracing ourselves for remote learning in the fall. Not officially announced yet but likely. [ Reply | More ]

Public or private? I think most of the smaller privates are planning to be in person. They just have to, as we see almost daily evidence on this board. The faculty can be pretty protected, but I worry about some of the staff. [ Reply | More ]

I would defer, if possible, and suggest it of my child. If it meant giving up admission altogether, that's another story. [ Reply | More ]

Ok, but defer and then what? What would your kid do for that year? My DC is starting at a SLAC in the fall, they have announced their plan to be open with the ability to pivot, class schedules have been revised so they can quickly go online if needed. If they do, that would not be great, but DC sitting at home playing Assassin's Creed for months isn't better, he made zoom work for HS and he can do it for college if he has to. [ Reply | More ]

NP -- my child is deferring and will work as an EMT. Another friend of his will be working with a food bank. Another friend is working on a political campaign [ Reply | More ]

np: The political campaign thing is what dd and a lot of her classmates plan to do if their school does not open. They will just take the fall term off (not freshmen) and try to make some difference in the world. I think it is way better than more zoom in the bedroom, which has not been great and they definitely do not want to repeat. [ Reply | More ]
