[ - ] NYC real estate question: I so enjoyed the conversation about the woman who was trying to do a FSBO, but I'm curious about one thing, why do you all call what in the rest of the country would be a condo an apartment? Is it because you own stock in the coop, not the unit itself? 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Condo is different than coop. Coops are shares in a building. Condo is outright ownership of a unit [ Reply | More ]

This is a weird question. We had condos and coops in Pittsburgh and I used to call my condo my apartment all the time. I don't think this is a NY phenomenon. [ Reply | More ]

condo is a form of ownership (like co-op) and while some have preferences for valid reasons, many of us, when we "house-hunt" in NYC are looking for an apartment to purchase, without regard to the legal form of ownership [ Reply | More ]

No, what I was asking is why do you all seem to refer to your owned apartments as apartments instead of condo? Where I live, if you said apartment, people would assume you rent, instead they would say condo, but that doesn't seem to be the case in NYC. [ Reply | More ]

because in manhattan 99% of people live in some type of building with other people living in it. Only the very wealthy (or lucky inherited) live in single-family homes. So apartment is just used interchagably with condo or coop. To say "I live in a condo/coop" would sound like you were trying to make sure the person know you owned and weren't renting...it would would sound pretentious. [ Reply | More ]

np--In private schools there are more adults in relationships with students. There are teachers in the playground at recess who know every child by name. In my dc's school teachers and children eat lunch together. I think it's harder for bullying to happen in this kind of situation. I'm surprised at the answers here. When we were thinking of moving to Westchester we looked at Bronxville and our realtor was very clear that while there are Jewish families, they are the kind, in her words, who pretend they are not. She did not think a family that went to holiday services, planned to have a bar mitzvah etc. would feel comfortable there. She suggested Pelham Manor, which has similar houseing stock, and excellent school district and a smiliarly easy commute to the city. The Jewish community there is small, but there is a local active temple. [ Reply | More ]

It's just statistics. If you actually calculated the odds, I bet you'd find it's almost impossible for there to NOT be at least one preschool that has two dc's admitted to Anderson. If you were to look at random probability, it would be a lot less likely for the acceptances to be spread out so that there is exactly one admit at 50 different schools and no double admits. You just happen to know one of the schools that got two. It's like the famous "birthday problem" in statistics. What seems very unlikely on the surface is actually very likely based on the way probabilities work. [ Reply | More ]

I found that if you want to retain a good nanny. You follow a pay-or-play policy. That means when you go on vacation, you pay them and you give them at least a week of vacation (which they agree to try to coordinate with you). You pay sick days and public holidays (and don't cheap out on MLK day) etc. This is what it takes to hold on to good full-time help, and I know (2 kids) that it's even harder to hold on to part time help. Progressive education influence + the idea that ability tracking makes academically less able kids feel bad about themselves + the idea that equality (everyone is the same) trumps merit (some people are better at some things than others). Educators pretend that teachers can teach to different levels, but of course this is very difficult to do (even more difficult because of testing environment) and is in fact, very rarely done. So smart kids are increasingly underserved. No one cares though cos teh emphasis is on lifting up those who struggle. It's a bad time to be a smart kid. People think that's whining, but kids are not able to say, Gee, I'm lucky I'm well fed and dont' live in the slums of Bangladesh. they just know they're bored and in trouble for acting out. b/c evaluation of whole schools is testing-based and the G&T kids are going to max out anyway, it's much easier to lift the bottom up a little bit and see some results in the overall score. G&T kids will score 99s no matter whether they're pushed to excel or not, whereas lower achieving kids can expect to see some marked improvement when they're pushed a little. in our school, they cut back from 2 to 1 G&T class and I think they keep that only to hang on to enough G&T kids to maintain the top end of the curve. Sorry--hit enter too fast. Try holding the top eyelid open with the middle finger of one hand. Hold the bottom eyelid open with the middle finger of the other hand. Then put contact lens on the pointer finger of the hand that is holding the bottom eyelid open and slowly move it toward the eye, looking away as you do. Keep that finger very slow and steady. getting it out is easier, as long as you eyes aren't really dry. My optomotrist made me do it once before he let me take the contacts, I suggest you get their help. One other piece of advice, getting contacts is easier if you put a drop of contact solution in the bowl of the contact. It helps it to slide right on. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you everyone for the good advice. I have been trying to get the contacts in at the eye dr's office - I have been 4 times and still cannot do it. I use all of his samples and leave without success. I am so embarrassed [ Reply | More ]

Good luck--you will get there eventually. In terms of getting it out, do the same thing as putting it in--hold the top lid open with one finger; bottom with the other. Then look away and use the pointer finger to push the lens over (off the pupil) and take it out with your pointer finger and thumb. When I was first being taught how to do this, the person at the eye doctor's office just had me hold the top eyelid open. It worked better for me when I used the other hand to hold the bottom eyelid open too. Even now, that's how I put them in and out. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] On a neighborhood listserve I belong to a bunch of Moms are setting up playdates for the their kids that will be in the same G & T class next yr. My daughter will be in one of the Gen Ed classes & I am feeling way left out. She failed the test this yr, but even if she passes we can't get into G & T there b/c we are out of district. I feel 7 yrs of inferiority coming on -- she is the oldest of 3 kids, too... 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Please don't think of it as your child failing a test. Also, a basic rule of etiquette is to not invite someone in front of someone else who is not included in the invitation. [ Reply | More ]

she should drop these friends. move on and make new friends. you won't have time for the old friends anyway, and if they are all in class together, your dd will feel like an outsider over time. if you link it to her "failure" to get into G&T, then she will pick that up and relate her sense of being on the outside to this fact. would not be good, so move on [ Reply | More ]

OP: You are all so sweet. Making me feel much better. I think the reality is it is a great school that will hopefully be able to provide differentiated learning for my kids even in their aren't in the G & T program, so maybe there is little to lament. [ Reply | More ]

I don't understand why you feel left out? A bunch of g&t mothers are trying to have pladates with kids from their class. Why don't you post to have pladates with your dd classmates in gen ed? I don't see how they are excluding you if your kid is not in the class. It goes by class. [ Reply | More ]

You can email the erb office with your child's name and address, testing date and site and schools selected. You MUST email credit card information if you are requesting more than 5 schools to receive the scores as they charge about $10 extra per report over 5 schools. They do not email back but you can call to confirm they rec'd your info. You can not add schools over the telephone. [ Reply | More ]
