Do many schools still do tracking? In Brooklyn? G & T seems to me to be tracking, why has it fallen out of favor with the below 90% crowd? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Progressive education influence + the idea that ability tracking makes academically less able kids feel bad about themselves + the idea that equality (everyone is the same) trumps merit (some people are better at some things than others). Educators pretend that teachers can teach to different levels, but of course this is very difficult to do (even more difficult because of testing environment) and is in fact, very rarely done. So smart kids are increasingly underserved. No one cares though cos teh emphasis is on lifting up those who struggle. It's a bad time to be a smart kid. People think that's whining, but kids are not able to say, Gee, I'm lucky I'm well fed and dont' live in the slums of Bangladesh. they just know they're bored and in trouble for acting out. b/c evaluation of whole schools is testing-based and the G&T kids are going to max out anyway, it's much easier to lift the bottom up a little bit and see some results in the overall score. G&T kids will score 99s no matter whether they're pushed to excel or not, whereas lower achieving kids can expect to see some marked improvement when they're pushed a little. in our school, they cut back from 2 to 1 G&T class and I think they keep that only to hang on to enough G&T kids to maintain the top end of the curve.
