[ - ] I feel like the worst person ever. After 3 months of trying to find them a new home, I put my cats down today. They were 14 1/2 years old and they peed and pooped everywhere (out of spite--they were checked out and were healthy.) The straw that broke the back was that my 3rd kid was born 5 months ago and has a severe allergy to them (she throws up almost every day, due to the mucus.) But I still feel like crap. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

the worst was the vet walking into the room and announcing that he'd never had an office visit like this in 30 years! well, what should I have done? left them in a park? drowned them? for christsake. he was kind once I explained the situation through my tears, but I really feel like that was just mean of him. He didn't have to do it if he thought it wasn't right. Your choice was much better than letting them outside or letting them go in a park somewhere, like people do all the time with dogs and cats. Now that's cruel. I'm sorry though. [ Reply | More ]

I don't get what the appeal would be based on? If the kid cannot take the test and perform well on it, he does not belong in G&T. If his inability to test well is related to a condition, then he still doesn't belong there. [ Reply | More ]

The idea is that many kids with Asperger's are off the charts gifted, but don't test well. And when they are 4 y.o. they are particularly adverse to tests like this. Being gifted is about being "gifted," not about testing well. [ Reply | More ]

then you don't know anything about aspergers. Until recently, it wasn't even generally diagnosed. Chances are you went to school with someone with it and just didn't know it -- think back to the really smart socially awkward kid. There is no reason any G&T couldn't educate an asperger's kid (except that the kid would likely be smarter than most of the other kids in class) [ Reply | More ]

If I can recall the wording in the Dept. of Ed. literature, the tests are about assessing the candidate's abilities for learning. Somebody with Asperger's probably needs special services, not a gt format - it's not about what is best for you but for the child. [ Reply | More ]

i don't think that's what the above poster was saying. they weren't taking issue with the fact that the kid was gifted, just that the G&T program, as it is currently offered in our school system, may not be appropriate. they may need a different kind of (equally academically advanced) setting. asperger's kids do not need special academic services. They could often use some play therapy so that they can make friends, but the vast, vast majority of asperger's kids are in regular classes (some of the asperger's kids I know are at TT schools, in fact) [ Reply | More ]
