yeah - that's what I said. Give me a freaking break lady! He was being disruptive. People who have disabilities who are unable to control themselves should not be able to stay on a flight and disrupt a whole plane load of people. You have to have some sort of rules of behavior that is acceptable in public [ Reply | More ]

so what is acceptable to you? A screaming toddler all the way to LA? I doubt it. If she can't control her kid, they have to consider the rights of other people to a relatively quiet plane ride. You are probably all for non smoking rights aren't you? Same principle [ Reply | More ]

I have plenty of compassion for her and her kid. But I also have compassion for a planeload of people who don't want a screaming jumping toddler all over the plane for 3 hours or whatever. You have to consider the rights of all the people on the plane. Flying is not a right. It is a priviledge. If you can't follow the rules, you are off the plane. Same thing if you get too drunk - they will kick you off. There are rules to uphold the social contract. If those are gone we will be living in chaos [ Reply | More ]

I think comapassion has very little to do with this. Of course one feels compassion for the child and parents, but if the child can't be buckeled in, delays flights and makes the entire flight a nightmare, he can't fly. They may just have to wait for a better time, medicate slightly ...? [ Reply | More ]

what I meant was, in NYC, it is illegal to smoke in a public place (bar, restarant etc) because the smoke bothers or is dangerous for others. Same principle. A screaming child is annoying and potentially dangerous on a flight. Some of us are scared of flying. I take valium when I have to fly. A screaming child could put someone over the edge. I take valium when I have to fly. WHile I am not normally an advocate of drugging children, perhaps in this case it would nto be a bad thing [ Reply | More ]

Actually, it would be bothersome to me - but I would understand. That is the definiton of compassion. No matter how hard you try to come up with a situation where I will behave as you - it isn't going to happen. I would even offer to switch seats so that I could sit by her and relief the passenger next to her that can't stand a crying child. Life is funny, sometimes it tries to teach you a lesson the easy way and when you fail to understand, it throws you a lesson the hard way. I sincerly hope that you are not placed in a situaiton with a child on the spectrum (and before you assume and make an "ass" out of yourself - I do not have an autistic child). [ Reply | More ]

well, since I did have a child with a severe heart defect, who would have been special needs had he survived, I think I can understand her situation more than you might think. I have a lot of compassion for parents with SN children. However, I don't think you can let them run wild in public. Period. Certain rules have to be upheld. We aren't talking about a kid who cried a little here. We are talking about a screaming child who would nto let her buckle his seatbelt. Different story [ Reply | More ]

If you need medication to fly - you are the one with the disablity. You are capable of far more harm than a two year old. YOU should not be allowed to fly as you are a danger to yourself and others. I have to wonder too as the pilot came back and told the child that he had to remain in his seat. That doesn't happen unless the child is out of his seat, and as anyone knows, you can't take off if the child is out of his seat on the floor. I feel for her, I have been on planes when my own kids were really upset, but I don't think we're getting the full story. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. I think that probably the kid was out of control, but I also think the flight attendants probably did exacerbate the situation by being impatient and nasty. (On the first request, not after numerous requests.) We all fly, we all know that with a few exceptions flight attendants can be impatient due to their working conditions. That being said, I have had a non-spectrum toddler refuse to be buckled in, and when I did buckle him in, he popped out. I got him in a second time and he calmed down, but honestly I EXPECTED to be thrown off the plane. There are safety concerns and especially after 9/11, I am not about to mess with FAA regulations. it all depends on how bad the misbehavior was. I am sure it was not just for crying, there is a crying child on every flight I have been on and I fly a lot. If the kid would not sit down and was kicking the people around, then removal was appropriate IMO. [ Reply | More ]
