It's a particular issue at schools that have always relied on funding and where the vast majority of the students are low-income. They do not raise a lot of money, fyi. I've looked into it. That said, it could be the next 116. I'm just pointing out some obvious issues. [ Reply | More

[ - ] To All Current and Future Public School Families For those of you with children under four, this will impact you very soon. For those of you who have older children, we need your support. Please sign this petition to put elementary admissions back in the hands of schools http://www.gopetition.com/online/20080.html When the DOE recently made elementary admissions a centralized process: Many families wrongfully received rejections from their older children's schools. Many other families never applied because the new system was not publicized well enough or required application in English. (Supplementary materials was provided in other languages, but not the application). Any type of zoning confusion or other discrepancy resulted in a rejection. Centralizing admissions costs money that would be better spent directly on creating stronger schools for our kids. It alienates families by furthering the impression of an impersonal bureaucracy. Without some admission of error, we have no reason to believe that the same mistakes won't be made again next year. Send the DOE a message. Sign the petition. http://www.gopetition.com/online/20080.html Pass this letter on to other listservs (sign your own name), print the petition out and get signatures. We hope to have a critical mass by Friday, June 27th to send to Joel Klein and the Office of School Enrollment. [ - ] wwyd - 5 yo's leapster broke - he had it for a while but i think he spilled juice on it - he wants a new one before we got on a trip out of town (and I would like for him to have it for our sanity) - I just checked out his piggy bank and he has more than enough in there to buy a new one - should i make him 'pay' for it with his own $? i would not make a 5yo pay for anything. they have no concept of money. i think it's ok to replace it if he's generally careful with his toys. or not replace it until a special occasion. [ Reply | More

we're not rich - we do fine; but i try not to be careful about what we spend on toys; eventually the piggy bank would be put into a savings - probably for him to use; he gets cash quite a bit from family so we just routinely put it in there. [ Reply | More

I might have a teachable moment with him, in a nice way.....count out money from the piggy so he knows how much he has and how much a leapster costs, and maybe even go to the bank counting machines (fun!), as well. Buy it for him, since it was an accident.....and remind him that is why we don't have toys at the table or in restaurants because food and drinks can ruin them. [ Reply | More

I would do Aaron in a heartbeat. My dc goes there and there are quite a few kids who have transferred from publics that were not serving their kids' needs. It is a huge pain and a big financial drain to pay and sue every year but I'd rather do that and know that my child is in the right educational setting. [ Reply | More
