I feel like the worst person ever. After 3 months of trying to find them a new home, I put my cats down today. They were 14 1/2 years old and they peed and pooped everywhere (out of spite--they were checked out and were healthy.) The straw that broke the back was that my 3rd kid was born 5 months ago and has a severe allergy to them (she throws up almost every day, due to the mucus.) But I still feel like crap. the worst was the vet walking into the room and announcing that he'd never had an office visit like this in 30 years! well, what should I have done? left them in a park? drowned them? for christsake. he was kind once I explained the situation through my tears, but I really feel like that was just mean of him. He didn't have to do it if he thought it wasn't right. Your choice was much better than letting them outside or letting them go in a park somewhere, like people do all the time with dogs and cats. Now that's cruel. I'm sorry though. [ Reply | More ]

Couldn't you have given them to a shelter to find a new home? [ Reply | More ]

every shelter I called (6 of them) would not take them. Even the shelter I got them from (14 1/2 years ago) refused them, even though the contract I signed back then said that if I ever gave them up, it would have to be to them. [ Reply | More ]

I don't either, but I think op did right thing. If cats were already peeing and pooping with new baby in the house, doesn't sound like they'd handle a big change well, especially at their advanced age. [ Reply | More ]

Op: every no-kill shelter I called would not take them. They can't find homes for the kittens, much less the peeing-everywhere 14 yo cats. [ Reply | More ]

Listen, stay away from posting online if you don't want to get abused. That's half of what these sites are about: kicking posters around. You tried, your cats would've been miserable moving, they had a long life for cats. RIP kitties and sleep well, op. That was hard but you did right thing for those animals. [ Reply | More ]

op: I thank you. I've gotten burned online before, but tonight? you and the other posters made me feel human, and I thank you. Now I'm off to bed with the baby. [ Reply | More ]

You did the right thing and the necessary thing for your family. Don't be sad. I have two cats and one poops/pees everywhere. I hate it. [ Reply | More ]
