Anybody know a kid with Asperger's who didn't pass G & T? Did they appeal based on dc's condition? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I don't get what the appeal would be based on? If the kid cannot take the test and perform well on it, he does not belong in G&T. If his inability to test well is related to a condition, then he still doesn't belong there. [ Reply | More ]

The idea is that many kids with Asperger's are off the charts gifted, but don't test well. And when they are 4 y.o. they are particularly adverse to tests like this. Being gifted is about being "gifted," not about testing well. [ Reply | More ]

np - I don't think any of the gifted schools & programs would be able to educate a dc with Asperger's. [ Reply | More ]

then you don't know anything about aspergers. Until recently, it wasn't even generally diagnosed. Chances are you went to school with someone with it and just didn't know it -- think back to the really smart socially awkward kid. There is no reason any G&T couldn't educate an asperger's kid (except that the kid would likely be smarter than most of the other kids in class) [ Reply | More ]

nowadays everything is some kind of condition. There is the "standard" child and every deviation is a condition that needs special treatment. [ Reply | More ]

Of course it can, but the kid has to test in. DF's dc did test in with AS (just posted elsewhere in the thread). [ Reply | More ]

I agree that the child has to test in. I was responding to the poster who said she didn't think a G%T class would be able to educate a dc with aspergers. [ Reply | More ]

I know someone with dc with Asperger's and dc scored 99 on OLSAT and is going to citywide program. Not all Aspergers dcs test badly. [ Reply | More ]

If I can recall the wording in the Dept. of Ed. literature, the tests are about assessing the candidate's abilities for learning. Somebody with Asperger's probably needs special services, not a gt format - it's not about what is best for you but for the child. [ Reply | More ]

NP: Asperger's is more than "socially lagging", you know. [ Reply | More ]

Totally depends on the child, no two kids are the same, even with that diagnosis. [ Reply | More ]

i don't think that's what the above poster was saying. they weren't taking issue with the fact that the kid was gifted, just that the G&T program, as it is currently offered in our school system, may not be appropriate. they may need a different kind of (equally academically advanced) setting. asperger's kids do not need special academic services. They could often use some play therapy so that they can make friends, but the vast, vast majority of asperger's kids are in regular classes (some of the asperger's kids I know are at TT schools, in fact) [ Reply | More ]

There are several in our G&T program, but they have to test in just like everyone else. [ Reply | More ]

Agree, some kids do others do not. A good friend's ds gets some services to help him with boosting social skills, but he is doing fabulously as far as academics go. In regular gen ed school. [ Reply | More ]

no. But I know one with asperger's who is in g&t and doing great. School knew about it when they took him. [ Reply | More ]

but he likely was able to test into the program, no? i think if the dc has asperger's, but can perform on tests, then why not. If he can't he probably will have too many problems in a G&T program and is better served in SNs program [ Reply | More ]

Many very intelligent kids didn't pass the G&T, for many reasons. Get over it and move on. [ Reply | More ]

I thought Asperger's had specific diagnostic criteria to meet - not just "socially lagging". [ Reply | More ]

it does have specific criteria, but those criteria have nothing to do with ability to function in a classroom [ Reply | More ]
