Friend just told me that in her dc's small, no-name preschool TWO children got into Anderson for K (non-sibs). Isn't that strange? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It was a lotto of high scoring dc - they were lucky - not strange at all. [ Reply | More ]

ITA! DH and I went to Ivy League schools and our kids will most likely be bright kids in public in NYC or the suburbs so we don't need a name preschool. I assume the 92nd St Y is a wonderful program, but it's would be a waste of money for us. [ Reply | More ]

and the fact that you and DH went to Ivy League schools has exactly what to do with sending your child to a no-name preschool? [ Reply | More ]

Exactly, very few kids from the TT preschools even bother with the G&T process. [ Reply | More ]

my dd--the one whose teacher cheated--only one who got into A in her class. others didn't know G & T testing was an option. [ Reply | More ]

It happens. One year there were 4 kids who got into Anderson from our non-TT preschool. Another year 4 kids got into Hunter. It depends. [ Reply | More ]

That's obscene, the concept of a TT preschool. Preschool is to learn how to sit in a circle, share toys, stand in line. [ Reply | More ]

La Escuelita, a "no-name" preschool has routinely had kids get into Anderson and Hunter (old process and new). How narrow of you to think that just kids whose parents calculate which are the "good" preKs are the smart kids... In my dc's classes, there were kids from headstarts, too! [ Reply | More ]

my dd, at a daycare preschool made 2nd round hunter. didn't get citywide, but was eligible. it's about IQ people, not prep. [ Reply | More ]

Not really. How many kids that never went to preschool and were parked in front of TV every day got in? I bet none at all, regardless of IQ. [ Reply | More ]

OP: My point was NOT the no-name preschool BUT the odds of two children from the same school getting in to A when they only take 50 kids citywide. [ Reply | More ]

It's just statistics. If you actually calculated the odds, I bet you'd find it's almost impossible for there to NOT be at least one preschool that has two dc's admitted to Anderson. If you were to look at random probability, it would be a lot less likely for the acceptances to be spread out so that there is exactly one admit at 50 different schools and no double admits. You just happen to know one of the schools that got two. It's like the famous "birthday problem" in statistics. What seems very unlikely on the surface is actually very likely based on the way probabilities work. [ Reply | More ]
