NYC real estate question: I so enjoyed the conversation about the woman who was trying to do a FSBO, but I'm curious about one thing, why do you all call what in the rest of the country would be a condo an apartment? Is it because you own stock in the coop, not the unit itself? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Condo is different than coop. Coops are shares in a building. Condo is outright ownership of a unit [ Reply | More ]

This is a weird question. We had condos and coops in Pittsburgh and I used to call my condo my apartment all the time. I don't think this is a NY phenomenon. [ Reply | More ]

condo is a form of ownership (like co-op) and while some have preferences for valid reasons, many of us, when we "house-hunt" in NYC are looking for an apartment to purchase, without regard to the legal form of ownership [ Reply | More ]

No, what I was asking is why do you all seem to refer to your owned apartments as apartments instead of condo? Where I live, if you said apartment, people would assume you rent, instead they would say condo, but that doesn't seem to be the case in NYC. [ Reply | More ]

While that mey be what you've encountered and what is implied where you've lived, in reality, an apartment isn't actually just for rental and a condo can be a townhouse and is not the only form of ownership for multi-tenant owned living. [ Reply | More ]

Poster above - Where do you live? I've lived in 7 states and owned or rented apartments in all and never differentiated b/w calling them apartments and condo and it was never an issue. [ Reply | More ]

Weird, b/c I've lived in St. Louis and DC and always referred to the condo I owned in St. Louis as my apartment as did other people I knew. [ Reply | More ]

NP: everyone in NYC says "my apartment" regardless of whether they rent or own. The people who say "my house" own townhouses or are recent moves [ Reply | More ]

uh, no. I am a born and bred nyer (Manhatttan), and I've always said "house" about our rental apartment. It's only non-natives who think this is weird. [ Reply | More ]

because in manhattan 99% of people live in some type of building with other people living in it. Only the very wealthy (or lucky inherited) live in single-family homes. So apartment is just used interchagably with condo or coop. To say "I live in a condo/coop" would sound like you were trying to make sure the person know you owned and weren't renting...it would would sound pretentious. [ Reply | More ]
