Nursery school teacher here: over the years, I have had some shut outs -- and, in every instance, there was some sort of "explanation." Maybe the ERBs were scattered and the family didn't look at a range of schools, maybe the parents were PITAs (and even if the school report was nice, the ongoing schools could tell), maybe DC had difficult playdates and school visits. That being said, I agree with this advice -- if you apply broadly and act interested on all tours/interviews, you should be okay. At a certain point, it does become a numbers game and DOAs say that they WL DC who would "fit" at the school, that they just don't have enough space for everyone. [ Reply | More ]

You never know who has connections or which PITA families were able to pull it together during the application process or what "brokering" went on behind the scenes. Sometimes that side of it *doesn't* make a lot of sense -- but the shut outs can be "explained." [ Reply | More ]

I think I agree. I think maybe every 30 mins is too much. I would remind her and ask her if she needs to go, every 30 mins, but don't put her on there so often. It will become an annoyance for her, and then a control thing. Accidents are bound to happen, but in this case she is doing it on purpose. Either put her in diapers for a few more weeks and try again, or just know that accidents will happen, always carry around a change of clothes (for girls it's so much easier when they wear dresses, as only the underwear needs to be changed). The fact that she is asking means that she is ready, but don't over push. GL [ Reply | More ]

i didn't have to do this, but i had CVS b/c if there had been a high risk for downs, i would have aborted. i was extremely depressed when i found out i was pg w/ #2 (suicidal, crying, etc), and was back and forth about aborting anyway. if the db would have also had downs, i would have probably not been able to deal at all. (mostly fine now, btw. due in 4 weeks. have still had moments of depression during pregnancy, but dh has been amazingly supportive and patient throughout, and we'll get through this.) anyway, that's my honest answer, take it or leave it. Downs Syndrome varies hugely in its effect. If you think it's just mild retardation, then it seems terrible to abort for that. But it can also mean multiple, life-threatening surgeries for heart problems, and pretty severe retardation. My neighbor's son has Downs, and he can barely walk and, at the age of 7, still wears a diaper. Maybe you are up for that kind of care -- and your DH and your other DCs are -- but that's a huge burden. Not to be taken on lightly. [ Reply | More ]

people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, lady. once you start making blanket statements about other people's choices, life is going to screw with you. [ Reply | More ]

I terminated my first pregnancy last year after the amniocentesis revealed the baby had Klinefelter's syndrome. It was an extremely painful decision based on my and my husband's assessment of our ability to care for a potentially mentally retarded child. We did not think we could handle it. It was extremely painful and devastating, but the right decision for us. I am now pregnant again and we had a CVS, which revealed no chromosomal abnormalities. It was not an easy decision to make, and I am so grateful I had the choice. [ Reply | More ]

I am so sorry you went through that, but I would have made the same decision and for the same reasons. Your story is exactly why women need to get out and THINK about their vote this November. [ Reply | More ]

Having a child is mostly a leap of faith and love ... if you cannot love a child who is "less than perfect" both mentally and physically then you have your decision. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] i'm having real estate regrets. bought our house in january for more than it's worth now, and saw a house yesterday that was almost 1/2 the price that i liked more than ours. tell me how to not feel terrible about this? 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Why beat yourself up? If you can afford the house, will live there for a while (more than 5 years), and can maintain it, you will be fine. [ Reply | More ]

i wish i had your attitude. this is, i'm afraid, a chronic attitude issue with me. i start obsessing about the thing i did wrong and the other path i could have should have taken. it's bad, not to mention lame. but thanks for the advice, i'll try [ Reply | More ]

Of course we could all make better decisions for ourself if we had crystal balls. We don't. We go with the information we had at the time. [ Reply | More ]

No matter when you bought the house, and for what price, you will always see better/cheaper/etc houses. Stop reading the real estate ads and you'll be fine. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] any Hunter moms on? I have two questions. One, considering homeschooling my dc for first grade and wondering if you could tell me what your dc learned in first grade math, reading? Can handle the rest, just curious about standards. And the second question, does Hunter have a psychologist that works with the children if they are having problems? Or do they have a list of recommendations? If schools is still in session I'll call Monday, but I think they are out already. Thank you. 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Hunter curriculum is 1 or 2 grades advanced. But there are many kids who are 3 or 4 grades advanced and they form small groups to go at their pace. [ Reply | More ]

Yes there is a school psychologist. In terms of the other stuff it really is at their own pace--some kids reading at 1st grade level, some at 5th or 6th. math varies by 2-3 grades too. [ Reply | More ]
