Should I try TT only and don't bother 2-3rd tier? Or should I look more broadly? Do private schools(even lower tiers) offer more than G&T public, or we should stay with 116? We turned down our g&t offer and will apply to a broad range of privates for next fall. Downfall, dd is a fall birthday and will have to do k over again in certain privates (non-parochial). Funny, we listed 116 as our first choice and would have gone their gladly. It is our neighborhood school and space issues aside, has a lot to offer. It is v. interesting to read what schools people are disappointed with...too bad there are no waitlists...another short sighted DOE (or should I say DOPE) decision. For what its worth, I would stick with 116....I know so many kids who are in or were in the g&t program there who got into v. good middle schools and/or high schools coming from there (upper lab, salk, and styvesant!). PS 166. DC reads at 4th grade level and 3rd grade math. DC is ready for K so that's what we got and that's where she is going( also has fall birthday). You should also look at The School at Columbia. It's private but follows the public school age cut off. DC could go private there without repeating a grade. Admissions applications are by lottery only. [ Reply | More ]

np: a good G&T is superior to the school at columbia. cannot imagine giving up a top G&T for it. the kids are very, very mixed in terms of ability (often the kids of powerful faculty whose kids didn't get in anywhere else and who pulled strings at the university + community kids who never attended preschool). What makes you think it is a breeze? When the child is ready - and not until - it should take about 2 weeks of consistent work on your part to complete the process. For some kids the "readiness" might not come until 3 or even 3.5 [ Reply | More ]

ITA here. I'm a mom of a 3.5 yo. Nothing worked until he was really ready and made the choice himself. It's was a rough 2 weeks prior to him being completely trained. I learned a big lesson that you cannot make them ready before they are. I really believe all those parents that say there kids are trained and then go through tons of underpants etc. are fooling themselves.
